North Kildare Cricket Club Men's 1st XI v Malahide (Refix) on Wed 14 Jun 2017 at 18.00
North Kildare Cricket Club Won by 29 runs (23/25 points)
Match report
NK welcomed Malahide to The Maws on Wednesday night in the first of what will be a few T20 refixes due to the recent weather. The lads wanted to get back to winning ways after a disappointing defeat to Kerry in The National Cup.
The game started well as skipper Vossy won the toss and decided we would have a bat, obvious choice when the setting sun or late evening gloom can make batting second tricky.
Vossy went out to open with Manny and the pair made sure there was no sluggish start, getting to 12 after two overs. Vossy can count himself unlucky, getting an in-swinging Yorker from Newland that would have done for most batsmen. Joshie came out and looked to attack while the powerplay was still in place. He got to 10 when Newland nicked him off, McAllister making no mistake behind the stumps. PR strode out and as he does, looked to ensure that bowlers can’t settle. This lead to his downfall as he got one somewhere near the toe of the bat and Mid-on took a good high catch going back. Matt Auret was next out and added 10 along with Manny before a good bit of fielding saw Manny run out while attempting a second run. If the throw was anything less than perfect he would have been ok but the fielding was good on this occasion. This brought TS to the crease and himself and Mat had work to do. Usually in t20 cricket, one good partnership means the batting side will have a competitive score at the break and that is what the two were thinking. There was plenty of time to go so the pair took their time, respecting the tight bowling from Davey and O’Shea but once they were settled they started nudging around the good deliveries and capitalising on anything full, targeting the straight fences with success. Tom fell for 33, bowled by Reynolds while attempting another big shot. The pair had moved the score from 39 to 93. Monty Singh came out to support Matt, who went through to his first Div 2 50, off 40 balls. He fell for 59, top edging a ball straight up, comfortably caught in the ring but he had ensured a competitive total and after Monty fell, pulling a full toss to deep square, Rob and AJ made sure the innings didn’t fizzle out, ensuring they got bat on ball and kept the score ticking over nicely. This brought NK to 140-7 off their 20.
A competitive total, especially given the slow outfield but NK knew they had to back it up with the ball, especially on the mat and with the strong looking Batting line up Malahide had.
The Firsts talk a lot about good lengths, lack of width and no ‘freebies’ when discussing their fielding innings. This holds true even more so in the shortened format. Matty and PR did this very well, putting a good squeeze on the batsmen straight away. This forced some rash shots as Malahide knew they had to keep up to the rate. PR clean bowled the dangerous O’Shea and when Davey swept straight to Manny at square leg who held on to a good catch, NK were in a good early position. However, with McAllister at the other end looking dangerous, NK couldn’t relax and nor did they. Malahide rode their luck with McAllister being put down twice but the bowling remained tight and boundaries were hard to come by. On another day, these drops may have proved costly but the lads made sure this wouldn’t happen. Gulab came on and bowled McAllister around his legs (change of fortunes). Gulab then cleaned up Riches in the same over and NK felt they were on top, especially when Matt bowled skipper Reynolds with a sharp Yorker. Both captains can say they were done by two very good deliveries on this occasion! However, Arjun and Chase then set about getting their side back in the game with some clean hitting, especially from Arjun. NK knew that they now needed wickets as the pair could catch up with the rate if they were to keep batting. They were playing their shots and NK just hoped that this would lead to chances, which it did. Chase was well caught by PR at long on and Arjun was snaffled at mid-wicket by Vossy who held on to a very good catch, and very important as well. Arjun had added a brisk 46 and will be annoyed to have picked out a lone fielder in the ring on the on side. Both these wickets coming off Manny’s bowling. Malahide still needed 50 runs when Arjun fell and needed to keep scoring quickly. Vossy brought himself on and while trying to keep up where Arjun had left off, Newland could only top edge a delivery which was well caught by AJ running forward from backward point. At the other end Tom managed (just about) to take a smart reaction catch off his own bowling at the second to send De Klerk back. This had Malahide 9 down and the game was wrapped up quickly in the next over, Skipper Vossy with the honour of bringing proceedings to a close, clean bowling Reynolds.
All in all a very satisfactory win for the firsts who will travel to Terenure this weekend in the last bit of 50 over cricket for a month while the t20 season kicks in!
Special mention Man of the Match, Matt Auret, who showed just how good an all-rounder he is in this match.
