Terenure v North Kildare Cricket Club Men's 1st XI on Sat 17 Jun 2017 at 13.00
North Kildare Cricket Club Lost by 8 wickets (1/25 points)

Match report Fresh from midweek triumph over Malahide, NK travelled to Terenure for their fourth league game of the season. As temperatures soared, the 1sts performance with bat and ball sadly did not. Terenure welcomed ex-Ireland international Langford-Smith and overseas pro Givon Christian into their ranks, and these two players played a decisive role for the opposition as they romped to an 8 wicket win.

NK skipper Vorster won the toss and decided his team would go about setting a target for the home side, and hopefully keep them busy in the field in the heat for the full 50 overs. A new mat had been laid recently in Terenure, so all were interested to see how this new surface would play. In Terenure's previous league match at home to Railway Union, their score of 140 odd proved to be enough as they bowled their opponents out for 120 odd, suggesting that this new surface may not be easiest to bat on. Sure enough NK would struggle to cope with the peculiar bounce the surface seemed to produce at times.

Uddin and Dalton opened up for NK and, courtesy of an aggressive approach from Uddin and some handy extras, the innings began brightly for the 1sts as they reached 22-0 in the first 4 overs. Dalton departed in the 5th over however when he was given out caught behind down the legside. This was perhaps a decision that went against NK as Dalton felt the ball had hit his thigh pad. Uddin continued to look to play aggressively but his luck soon ran out when he was caught for a breezy 22. Vorster joined Manny Singh at the crease and the pair looked to knuckle down and set about building what could be a key partnership for the 1sts. However both batsmen struggled to find the singles and rotate the strike against the bowling of Langford-Smith and Christian. The pair added just 22 runs in 10 overs before Vorster was dismissed by an easy caught and bowled for Langford-Smith. Mat Auret and a very patient Manny Singh then took the 1sts to a score of 84-3 by the end of the 24th over. This was certainly not a dominant position to be in but NK were confident they could push on from it and post a respectable total. However a mini but decisive collapse left the NK innings floundering as Auret, Satchwell and Neavyn all departed in quick succession. Mat looked in decent touch again but was unable to reproduce his form from Wednesdays win over Malahide as he fell for just 15 in the 25th over. In the following over disaster struck for NK when Satchwell gloved a length ball that reared on him from off-spinner Cheema through to the keeper. Neavyn then followed two balls later when he was bizarrely adjudged to have knicked off by umpire Norton. Neavyn was at first amused that the keeper was appealing for a caught behind and then left utterly astonished when the finger was raised. An awful decision and one that left the 1sts in serious trouble now on 86-6. Paul Ryan joined a still stolid Manny Singh at the crease with the firsts now desperately in need of a significant partnership to steer the innings back on course. Ryan looked to be positive from the off despite the precarious position his side were in. His attempt to put some wind back in the NK sails restored some hope for his teammates watching on the sidelines that the innings could still be salvaged and a respectable total achieved. A further 34 runs were added and the firsts really needed this partnership to develop further, but it wasn't to be as first Singh and then Ryan were dismissed in consecutive overs to leave the NK innings in dire straits on 122-8. Sadly there were to be no heroics from the lower order. Clint Auret drove uppishly and was smartly caught at mid-off and Walshe was the last to go when his off stick was emphatically removed from the ground by Langford-Smith, leaving NK with a total of 140 all out in the 43rd over.

Interestingly, in the same fixture last season, this was almost exactly (141) the same score the 1sts managed to defend. Could they repeat the feat this time around?

With the NK innings having come to a premature end, there was to be 7-8 overs of the second innings before tea was taken. The 1sts felt they needed a big session here to put some pressure on Terenure, or at least a tight, containing couple of spells from the opening bowlers, with perhaps a wicket to keep things somewhat in the balance at the break. However Mat Auret and Wasif Ali, sharing the new ball, struggled to consistenly find good areas and as a result Terenure, thanks in the main to the impressive Christian, scored briskly during this spell before the break in play. No breakthrough was forthcoming for NK and so at tea Terenure looked to be in complete control on 43-0 off 8 overs.

NK seemed to be unusually flat during this mini session and this didnt really change after the break. Ryan and Singh replaced Auret and Ali and both had a go at getting the breakthrough for the 1sts, but to no avail. Christian continued to be impressive and his 71 ball 66 and opening partnership of 107 with McDonald completely took the game away from NK. Satchwell finally got the wicket that NK needed early doors when he knicked off Christian for a straightforward catch for keeper Uddin. Vorster then secured a consolation point for the 1sts when he had McDonald caught in the covers by Satchwell.

So not a good days work from the 1sts by any means. It’s a result and performance that the team will look to put behind them quickly though, with an important T20 league refix coming up midweek at home to Rush.
