North Kildare Cricket Club Men's 1st XI v Co. Kerry on Sun 29 May 2016 at 1:00pm
North Kildare Cricket Club Lost By 108 Runs

Match report Before North Kildare entered Division 2, one of their main targets for the year was to pick up a piece of silverware… their main target; the National Cup. After their elation in beating Malahide last weekend and following up with a sensational victory against Terenure, the firsts were buoyed with confidence and felt that they could further progress into the next round of the National Cup by beating Kerry – a relatively unknown opposition – but no doubt, an opposition that was not to be taken lightly.

For the first time this season, Bob had lost the toss and Kerry elected to bat first on the mat. Unfortunately, having received some insight into the Kerry dressing room from Josh (who plays with Kerry in the Munster League), it was a shame to not have Kerry on grass, but because of the draw being so late it wasn’t possible to prepare a hard enough wicket. Regardless; NK were confident that they could beat their opposition on whatever surface they played on. To cut a long story short, the Kerry lineup looked very one-dimensional at times. It seemed that every one of their batsman from start to finish either dealt in boundaries or nothing. This was never more apparent than with opener, A. Khan at the crease who genuinely scored 95 per cent of his runs on the leg-side, heaving at anything full or straight. With this style of play, it was frustrating at times, but NK also knew that they could expect chances to come on a regular basis and this eventually began to change the course of the game. Because the firsts had toiled hard without PR for the first 18 overs and dragged themselves back into the contest with a brilliant spell of bowling once again from Immy, Manny and Wasif; the eventual pressure became too much for Kerry and they lost wickets in clusters. This was until A. Anwar (apparently just back from representing Pakistan u.19) was allowed to find his feet having been put down twice before reaching 20. As his innings progressed, Anwar’s scoring ark widened hugely and he began to dispatch anything full or with a hint of width. With no one really providing much support at the other end, Anwar farmed strike towards the end of the over and demolished the NK attack as he rapidly caught up to a run-a-ball century. Anwar eventually ended on a very well-made 97* (98), but at one point (when Wasif was in full swing), he was striking it under 30. Anwar took full advantage of the dropped chances and to his credit; looked a very good bat as his innings unfolded, but NK were rather disappointed to have allowed Anwar to get away which led to Kerry ending on 243-7 from their 50.

Regardless of the opposition perhaps scoring anything between 50-70 runs more than they should have, the firsts were more than confident that they could chase down less than 5 an over on the mat on another glorious afternoon with a quick outfield to aid their cause.

Rob decided to throw Wasif up the top of the order to take advantage of the factors mentioned and to get NK ahead of the required run-rate. Unfortunately, Manny was dismissed with the very first ball of the second innings which brought Vossie to the crease early on. Khan then had his second in his very next over when he removed Wazzle and this is where Mat Auret and Vossie urgently needed to get the NK innings back on track. The pair did so to a certain extent, but when Mat & Vossie were both dismissed by Alam just balls apart, NK were right back up against it yet again. Other than a decent 23 from Rob and a quickfire 17* from Dollars down the order, there isn’t much need to go into any further detail in regard to the North Kildare batting innings. NK were eventually bowled out for a pitiful 135; falling 108 runs short of their target, which in truth, was rather modest to begin with. Due to some quality bolwing at times from the likes of Khan and Alam, NK eventually sucummed but only had themselves to blame in what was a rather weak effot in chasing down their target as seen umpteen times already this season.

So it wasn’t to be three in a row for the firsts, but NK could still take away positives from the weekend having beaten Terenure the day before by the narrowest of margins as well as not dropping points in the league. However, the batting woes further continued for NK and this is something that will desperately need to be adjusted moving forward. Mention must go to Kerry though who looked a very solid and together unit who played well to their strengths and were certainly the better side on the day. From everyone at North Kildare; it would be great to see them go on to bigger and better things in the National Cup and in the future.
