North Kildare Cricket Club Men's 1st XI v Malahide on Sat 14 May 2016 at 13:00pm
North Kildare Cricket Club Won By 3 Wickets (22/25pts)

Match report Following on from a nail-biting finish at the Maws which saw NK reach the next stage of the National Cup; NK were back in action against Malahide in the league and were hoping to get their first league win on the board against a stern opposition who had just come down from division 1.

Rob won the toss once again and put the opposition in on a decent looking grass wicket which seemed to be the case when the opposition got off to a slow, but very steady start. McAllister looked to be in fine form which was backed up at the other end by Hingston who toiled hard early doors to keep PR out who had him in a fair amount of trouble. Regardless of the excellent opening stand, the NK attack stuck to their guns and knew that by bowling tight and consistent lines and lengths, they could eventually force a mistake and this plan finally came to fruition. Thanks largely to PR, Manny and Imran’s miserly spell with the ball; McAllister played a shot he perhaps might not have when he hit one hard but straight to the hands of Rob at short-cover who took an excellent sharp catch. McAllister went for a well-made 44 and NK were happy to have finally taken the breakthrough just before drinks. What was to happen next was rather unexpected… Malahide’s skipper & no.3, Reynolds looked like he had a train to catch and played at every delivery he faced – this was until he played one too many – dancing down the wicket and being bowled by Immy who had his first. So; two down before drinks looked a hell of a lot more positive and this got even better when no.4, Muntha was run-out by Louis without facing a ball, when Lou collected the ball way out in the deep and hurled it straight over the top to Joshi in an exceptional piece of fielding. Drinks were taken and NK had turned the game on its head; moving from 83-0 to 93-3 in a matter of 11 deliveries. After drinks, the trend continued and wickets continued to tumble due to some excellent spin bowling from Manny and Imran, backed up from an terrific second spell from PR. Other than a quick cameo from K. Reynolds down the order who got a run-ball-ball 24, there was no real resistance from the opposition whose shot selection was poor at times, but this cannot take away from a brilliant bowling performance from the North Kildare spin attack that led to a strong opposition being bowled out for a mere 147 in less than 40 overs.

To recap on what was a strange first innings; the opening pair of McAllister & Hingston shared a stand of 83 which really seemed to be a partnership that could set up a lengthy run-chase for NK. However; thanks to a brilliant spell from Imran in which saw him bowl his ten straight through, the off-spinner recorded his first ever five-wicket-haul for the club in what was by far his best every performance with the ball. Manny was unfortunate to not take a wicket, but his opening spell was enough to restrict the opposition which led to wickets at the other end. Big mentioned also to PR who picked up the final two wickets in his second spell which came at a vital time as Reynolds looked dangerous down the order. So; having done an exceptional job in the first innings, it was up to the NK batting lineup to finish off the job and Rob and Manny would open up; hoping to provide the platform for a successful run chase.

After a maiden opening over from Saville, Peter Chase (current Irish international) opened up at the other end and it was excellent to see Manny take one of the fastest bowlers in the country for 9 off his first including a vicious cut-shot that raced away, probably being the highlight of the NK batting innings. Unfortunately for NK; this is where their early joy ended. Rob was bowled in Chase’s next over, Manny then fell unfortunately in the next to a ball that seemed to stick in the wicket and matters became even worse when Vossie was run-out in a serious mix-up with PR – only for PR to be bowled 2 balls after that – NK now on 39-4 and in serious trouble. Imran and Mat Auret decided they would fight fire with fire though and really took the attack back to the opposition. While the pair were at the crease, it looked as if NK would knock off their required target in rapid time (the pair scoring well above a run-a-ball), but with NK; things are rarely so straightforward. Immy departed for a 13 ball 24, a knock that really relieved the pressure on the middle order and Mat Auret holed out soon after which really didn’t help NK’s cause. Things then got worse when Joshi was given out LBW for a blob, but this brought Clint & Dollars to the crease; the same pair that had rescued a victory from “the depths of hell” against Bonds Glen less than a week ago. The pair looked as if they were re-enacting their knock from the weekend before with a vicarious feel to the end of the innings. Although nerves were on edge because of the gravity of getting NK’s most famous ever victory; both Clint and Dollars showed exactly the level of maturity and application needed and began to edge NK closer to the finish line. With just over 9 overs remaining, the two lads had put together a stand worth 42 for the 8th wicket and vanquished any fears of throwing away the biggest results in NK’s history; NK victorious by 3 wickets in the end.

Thanks to a 77 ball 20 from Disco and a 32 ball 15 from Dollars; it was safe to say that both of the lads showed true determination and grit to see their side over the line - backing up the NK bowling attack that morning – Imran leading the front with his first 5-for. The result came as a wide awakening to the NK dressing room in the sense that they were not just in division 2 to make up a slot, but they were there to compete and beat the best in the division. As well as this; following on from a thumping at the hands of Trinity in their opening game; it was quite clear that the rest of cricket Leinster that North Kildare were to be taken lightly at their own peril… a mistake that NK were hoping Terenure would make next weekend in the opener of their double weekend next week.
