North Kildare Cricket Club Men's 1st XI v Dublin University on Sun 01 May 2016 at 12.30pm
North Kildare Cricket Club Lost By 132 Runs (0/50pts)

Match report In pre-season (following on from finishing 3rd in division 3 last season), the firsts found out that they were to be given the opportunity to play in divison 2 for the first time in the clubs' history; facing Trinity for their opening contest of 2016, boasting two current Irish Internationals - Dockrell and Joyce, as well as u19 international - Lorcan Tucker.

Typically, the weather decided to put a damper on things as seen in so many previous seasons. Eventually; play got underway, but not before rain had contributed to shortening the game to a 30 over a side match. Rob got the season off to a good start (at least in terms of coin toss victories) and put the opposition in on a grass wicket thanks to a top effort from Matt Chase, Gerry and the ground team who really came through to produce a grass strip.

NK got off to a reasonably good start, limiting the opposition to 4-an-over for the first ten - dismissing the opening pair of Von Behr & Paul in the process - and Wazzie snatching what could possibly be the catch of the season in the opening game, launching himself at full stretch to the right to hold onto a ball that was hit hard to square-leg; a special moment to start the campaign. This brought both George Dockrell and Lorcan Tucker to the crease. The pair started patiently with some tight bowling from Imran and Wasif, but as the pair spent further time at the crease; they targeted the short boundaries to great effect. Manny Singh went for 34 in his 4, really showing the quality of the opposition when coming down the track to Manny who was unfortunate to go the distance on a couple of occasions. Long story short; Trinity really went onto dominate in the final overs and reached the impressive (but obtainable) total of 181-6 from their 30 – Dockrell and Tucker contributing 78 & 52 respectively. Big mention to PR going for just 13 in his 6, Imran for bowling a consistently good line and length and to Wasif who produced a cracking spell of bowling for very little reward, undeservedly so.

With 181 to chase from 30 overs, the firsts felt somewhat confident but knew that 6-an-hour would be a tough ask on the early season wicket that was tricky to bat on. Regardless, Trinity showed the way on the wicket in how to post a decent total; play straight, rotate strike as much as possible and keep wickets in hand for the final overs.

What happened next was, quite frankly; a batting masterclass from North Kildare… And, by masterclass; it was in terms of exactly how NOT to chase a total. To cut a long and painful story short, NK eventually succumbed to a very modest total of 49 all out in an abysmal batting display with only Josh Uddin (making his debut for NK) and Mattie Auret showing any sign of promise with the bat, but not nearly enough to get NK up to respectability. In the end, NK came up short by 132 runs which really didn’t show the real difference between the two sides. On another day, this contest could’ve been a much closer outing, but in full credit; Dockrell and Tucker would’ve been difficult to deal with for any opposition on that given day with their batting display.

So; after a long pre-season, the firsts had finally got their season underway – perhaps not in the manner that they would’ve liked – but with their first division 2 game under their belt, the experience was still something to take into the firsts’ next outing; Bonds Glen in the National Cup next week. The firsts have had a torrid time in the competition so far, but have targeted the National Cup this season and feel they have a very strong chance of advancing past next weeks’ opposition and hope to bounce back immediately after their disappointing outing against Trinity.
