Longford 1 v North Kildare Cricket Club Men's 1st XI on Mon 03 Aug 2015 at 13.00
North Kildare Cricket Club Lost By 28 Runs

Match report The firsts traveled to one of their least favourite grounds in Longford against a side that the seconds had beaten twice the year before in div.6. Although the midland side were three divisions below the firsts, they were under no illusions that they would have an easy game; particularly at a ground that favoured the opposition hugely.

Rob won the toss and elected to bowl first on the mat; but, with an outfield that looked like a World War 2 minefield with a cricket strip in the middle to provide entertainment for soldiers, Bob's decision was totally justifiable. Jumping way ahead in the firsts' innings with Longford at 56-7, North Kildare felt they were three quick wickets away from wrapping up proceedings and knocking off their target, getting in their cars and blissfully coming away from Longford with a win under their belt and a cup final to play for. At 56-7 though, the lack of official umpires really played it's part in what was to happen next. Both Sarfraz brothers appeared to be stone dead LBW to the hands of Manny Singh who had them in stitches early on. Unfortunately for North Kildare though; it appeared as if the Longford players who were standing umpire had forgotten the rules of cricket and it looked as if LBW was no longer a legal dismissal. Opposition skipper had more than his fair share to say whilst batting and with every decision going against NK, things began to get heated and play was interrupted after a nasty altercation that would never have happened with an official umpire at the game. Oppo no.8, 9 and 10 managed to add 147 runs between them while taking after Manny and Vossie in particular; using the short straight/cow boundaries to their advantage in rather agricultural fashion. In truth though, the firsts had their fair share of opportunities to finish off the innings but failed to take them which cost them dearly. From 56-7, Longford had somehow managed to finish on a very good total (from their perspective), leaving NK to chase 229 in 40 overs in their second innings after a bad-blooded affair in the first.

The firsts were definitely dragged down to a lower level and let themselves down by not finishing off the innings as they should've, but if Sarfraz (who finished on 79) was given out LBW without reaching double-figures as he should've, there would never have been a need to chase a total over 200.

All of this aside, the firsts were still fully confident that they could chase their score with ease. With straight boundaries that needed just a half decent connection to clear the rope as well as short square boundaries also; Wasif was thrown up the order and got NK off to the ideal start that was needed. Although Manny and Walshe were both dismissed during; Wasif blasted a quickfire 44 which brought NK up to 68-3 at the point of his dismissal, but had only used up 9.3 overs in the process. NK were above the rate and felt they could knock off their required runs with one big score down the order. Unfortunately for NK; all three of Dollars, Bob and Vossie got good starts that kept NK cruising along nicely but all lost their wickets at untimely stages during their innings. With 25, 30 & 38 respectively, all three provided a platform, but failed to go on to make the 60 or 70 that would've brought NK over the line with comfort. Sandy, Gulab, Melissa, Baz and Clint (who had injured himself in the first innings) all did their utmost to try and get NK over the line, but the required rate was too much to keep up with and NK fell 28 runs of their target in a bitterly disappointing conclusion to a game that was played completely in the wrong spirit.

The firsts will most definitely want to forget about this fixture in a hurry but thankfully; the Wallace Cup is not in the forefront of the firsts' aspirations this season and provides the consolation that they can now concentrate fully on the league and possible promotion.
