Clontarf 2 v North Kildare Cricket Club Men's 1st XI on Mon 22 Jun 2015 at 18.00
North Kildare Cricket Club Won By 1 Run

Match report The firsts travelled to Castle Avenue for the second time in two days - this time in the Tillian Cup semi-final against Clontarf. NK (having lost narrowly the day before) were hungry to finally get the better of a Clontarf side that frustrated NK numerous times in the past.

Bob won the toss *again* and elected to bat first on the same wicket the firsts had played on the previous day. Things got underway in the worst way possible; NK losing both Manny and PR early from two runouts that both could've been prevented. The early wickets meant that NK had to rebuild rather than take the attack to the opposition, which resulted in NK going quite slowly up until the 8th over. The firsts sat on 44-2 after 8 overs, but when Nazir was introduced into the attack, Imran felt that it was a perfect opportunity to get the run rate up and did exactly that. Immy dispatched Nazir (who has had a lot of success against NK) for 18 from his over and completely changed the complexity of the NK innings. Imran untimely lost his wicket soon after when he pulled Collier straight to square-leg, but had given the NK batting innings the momentum it needed. Mattie Auret joined Bob who was providing the steady base at the other end and, having just scored a half century the day before; NK still felt they could post a large total with Mattie at the crease. Unfortunately for Matt and NK, he could not capitalise on his innings the previous day and fell in almost identical fashion to Imran for 1. Bob soon departed, which left Tom and Vossie with the last five overs to bat; score on 99-5 from 15 and NK in desperate need of a stand that could get the firsts up to a competitive score. The pair duly obliged and shared a 55 run stand in just 4.4 overs. Vossie fell with just two balls left in the innings having made 27(14), but the pair were able to cross which left Satch on strike for the last couple of deliveries. Tom then finished off the innings with a four and a massive straight six that set up the second innings perfectly. TS finished with a rapid 14 ball 36 which was crucial in NK reaching 164-6; a more than competitive total that was due to NK sticking to their plan of finishing off the innings with wickets in hand and playing with freedom as discussed before the innings began.

Thanks to a solid platform Bob laid at the top of the order, a quickfire 38 from Imran and a close to perfect finish from Satch and Vossie; NK felt they were just one good innings away from booking their first ever place in the Tillian Cup final.

Manny Singh and PR opened up again due to the success that the pair had experienced against Malahide in the quarter finals. The spin kings set the second innings up perfectly - PR removing Juno for single figures for the second day in a row and giving very little away to the opposition. Clontarf's Bobbo Forrest decided to up the tempo and went after PR with a large deal of success, but the pair of Bobbo and Collier weren't going at a rate that really worried NK; although the firsts were keen to break their partnership. Collier and Bobbo batted until the 12th over, when Collier was dimissed by Louis for a run-a-ball 30. Gopal and Nasir were also sent back shortly by Louis and NK were now strong favourites to finish off the job they had started. At 106-4, having been 95-1, NK had taken wickets just at the right time to bring the Tarf innings to a slight halt although Bobbo was still at the crease and edging dangerously close to a century. Even with the loss of three quick wickets though, Bobbo had brought Clontarf within touching distance of victory. Vossie (who had done a good job of keeping Bobbo and Clontarf at bay), bowled the second last over which went for just five runs; meaning that Clontarf needed 14 from the last over to book themselves a cup final. With Louis, Manny and PR bowled out; it was left to Matt Auret to take on the responsibility with the ball in the final over. Matt started well conceding a couple of two's off the first two balls of the over. With four balls left and Clontarf needing 10 for victory, Bobbo tried to go big and got a top edge that went straight up and to the disbelief of Matt, NK and to all of those who watched on; the ball was put down by Bob who seemed to do everything right other than hold on to the catch. Bobbo came back for a second and dispatched the very next ball for 6; bringing up his century and resulting in Clontarf needing just four to win from the last two deliveries. At this point; NK couldn't believe what had just happened, but Matt Auret stuck to his task brilliantly conceding just 1 run off his next delivery which also resulted in a runout, but Bobbo remained on strike for the final ball with the opposition needing 3 to snatch victory from the jaws of defeat. With the weight of an entire club's expectation on his back, Matt Auret charged in and got one right in the block hole that Bobbo couldn't get bat underneath. Bobbo was runout on his way back for the second which meant that NK had booked their place in the Tillian Cup final to the elation of boys and to the relief of Bob who had been sabotaged earlier in the over by a seagull that deviated the path of the ball on its way into the gloves which nearly cost NK the game.

Despite a sensational century from oppositions' Bobbo Forrest which brought his side within touching distance of the final, a number of chances that were put down and the nerviest final over the firsts have experienced for a long time; NK had deservedly reached their first ever Tillian Cup final with an epic 1 run victory against a Clontarf team that NK had been desperate to beat for the last couple of seasons and had finally done so in the most remarkable fashion.

So - regardless of a century being scored by the opposition, NK had demonstrated that a team performance is always greater than individual brilliance that of which Bobbo displayed during his century. Thanks to contributions from Immy, Satch, Bob and Vossie with the bat and top spells of bowling from all five of the NK attack - the firsts will play Pembroke 2's on Sunday, the 19th of July in the final in Terenure.

Thanks to those who travelled out to Castle Avenue to support the lads in one of best games of cricket anyone could ever wish to see and to Barra Mac for scoring on short notice once again. One can only hope that the firsts will not need to take the game into its final over in the final on their quest for victory.
