Malahide 2 v North Kildare Cricket Club Men's 1st XI on Mon 08 Jun 2015 at 18.00
North Kildare Cricket Club Won By 46 Runs

Match report The firsts traveled to Malahide to play an opposition that they had beaten the season before in the same competition at the same stage. Buoyant with their victory over Dundrum the weekend before in the Senior 2 Cup, the firsts were greeted with some welcomed sunshine on a beautiful afternoon at the international ground that had seen Ireland thrash UAE the previous week - a feat that North Kildare were looking to replicate.

Neavyn lost the toss and surprisingly; Malahide opted to field first on a quality looking grass wicket. Unfortunately; NK did not got off to the start that Manny and Bob had been consistently producing this season. Bob was given out LBW for a blob - a decision that Rob felt went against his favour - 6-1. PR joined Manny and hadn't reached double figures before he too was given out LBW at the other end - another decision that PR and NK were scratching their heads at. This was followed by the biggest stand of the game between Manny and Imran; a stand of 59 which set NK up for a big finish. Manny 30(28) looked in typically good nick and Imran played in usual fashion; smashing a 25 ball 42 with some hefty blows that cleared the huge Malahide boundaries. Imran blasted five maximums in his innings - the only player to score a six in the game's entirety. Imran's demise was untimely, but as Tom (on the back of a 45 ball 95 against Dundrum) strode to the middle, NK were fully confident that they could post another imposing total. What happened next was surprising and unexpected. Tommie couldn't seem to get going and when Manny finally departed, Louis joined Tom and seemed to be having the same struggle Satch had experienced. Louis departed for 2 after another questionable LBW decision which saw Vossie greet TS in the middle. At 105-5 with just 4 overs remaining, the platform that Imran and Manny had built had not been taken advantage of and NK needed to finish strongly to post a competitive total. Thanks to some good running from the lower order and an important 21(13) from Vossie (as it seemed at the time); the firsts finished with a respectable 135-7 from their 20; aboout 30 runs short of a target they would've liked to have reached.

Although NK hadn't capilised with the bat as they should've; the oppo had to go at nearly 7 an over in their run chase with NK having just enough runs on the board to be competitive. Bob opted to go with spin at both ends opening up, having seen that pace off seemed to be the route to go on the particular wicket. Manny and PR took the new ball and supported Bob's claims in some style. The "spin kings" who are rapidly becoming a formidable force together, went for just 33 runs between them in their ten overs - removing half of the opposition batting lineup in the process. The two offies produced two fantastic spells' of bowling and set NK up beautifully to defend their low total. Most would try to suggest that the opposition did not go hard enough or question how they could only score 33 in the first ten, but the the opposition had very little to do with it. Manny and PR were in full control, bowled tight and consistent lines and lengths which resulted in one solitary boundary in the first ten overs. Bob - who already had his claims justified that spin was the way to go - then brought on Vossie and Imran to support his notion further. Immy and Vossie continued exactly where Manny and Paul had left off - taking four wickets between them (two a piece) and restricting their opposition to less than six an over while doing so. 20 overs of spin later; NK had bowled their way through to the semi-final of the Tillian Cup for the second year running.

Thanks to an incredible bowling performance from the four NK spinners which saw them concede just two wides in their innings (one of them resulting in a stumping), NK have penciled another week day game in their season into their fixture list. The firsts were extremely professional and ruthless in the way the went about their second innings with some good catching and fielding to back up the bowling.

A mention to those who traveled in number to support the lads once again and to Barra for scoring on short notice for the second time this season. The support seems to be bringing out the best in the firsts this season and NK will hope that both the form, and support will continue. Another mention to oppo youngster Derlerk who jumped at the oppurtunity to sub field when Malahide lost a player early; making his debut for the division four side and looking competent in doing so.
