Leinster 2 v North Kildare Cricket Club Men's 1st XI on Wed 27 May 2015 at 18:00
North Kildare Cricket Club Lost By 9 Wickets (0/25pts)

Match report Four days after the firsts had thrashed Clontarf 2's at the Maws, a different challenge in Leinster awaited in a 20/20 midweek refix - a chance to go top of the table and to get their third straight league win on the trot against a side that NK had fond memories of from the 2014 campaign.

Rob won the all-important toss and elected to bat first on a beautiful grass wicket and a quick outfield. This paid immediate dividends as Rob and Manny got NK off to a similar start that they had produced against Civil Service in posting 199. The pair got to 67-0 from 7.4 overs before Rob was bowled looking to pull a length ball off his hips. This wasn't before Rob had smoked a 33 ball 46 in sublime fashion. Although Rob's wicket was untimely, Manny was still at the crease and looking dangerous as his rich vein of form continued. Unfortunately, 67-1 turned into 103-3 which saw the back of Paul, Immy and Tom, but, with 8 overs remaining, Manny still in the middle and a lot of batting eagerly awaiting on the bench; NK were confident they could post an imposing total. Wasif was thrown up the order, but his wicket was the start of a batting collapse that saw the back of Vossie, Matt Auret, Ger and Manny all in one over - a hattrick for youngster Finn Conaty, who didn't have to work particularly hard for his wickets... Nk; having set an excellent foundation to post a big score had somehow managed to completely swing the game in Leinster's favour and if it wasn't for Clint and Mattie O'Meara's late order resistance that got the firsts up to a competitive 157; NK would've been in serious trouble.

The firsts were disappointed as they hadn't capilised on their impressive start, but knew they had enough runs on the board to make life difficult for their opposition once they put put pressure on the Leinster openers.

Ironically; the pressure that NK wanted to apply on the opposition had been turned around on themselves after two off-colour opening spells from Wazzie and Clint coupled with some rather ordinary fielding. After four overs, the opposition had already reached 46 for no loss and it was up to PR and Manny to claw things back with the ball. The "spin kings" did so, but couldn't get the all important breakthrough that NK so desperately needed. 8 bowlers were used in an attempt to crumble the solid foundation that the oppo openers had built, but it wasn't til the last ball of the 17th over that Matt Auret got the first wicket of the innings - about 13 overs too late... Leinster knocked off their remaining runs the next over and cruised to a 9 wicket victory, courtesy of a major batting collapse, some out of character bowling and some rather abysmal fielding.

To their credit, the Leinster opposition barely offered a chance between the two of them in their entire innings. Although things were made easy by the NK bowling attack and fielding unit at times, both Forest and Coad batted exceptionally well and professionally and were ruthless in knocking off their target.

Although the result is a sour one, there were positives to take yet again. Rob and Manny continued their excellent form at the top of the order and are proving to be one of the most consistent opening pairings in the league. An important lesson can also be taken away, that it is imperative to know that any opposition can beat any team on any given day.

The firsts will definitely have better days this season and will look to put the result to the back of their minds no later than this Sunday when the firsts meet a tricky opponent in Dundrum in the Senior 2 Cup.
