Laois 2 v North Kildare Cricket Club Men's 2nd XI on Sat 04 Jul 2015 at 13.00
North Kildare Cricket Club Won By 4 Wickets

Match report Playing just their third league game this season (the first since the second last weekend in May) - the seconds traveled to Laois - a place that NK had come to know as "The Graveyard" because of the lack of success the club had, had there in the past.

The opposition won the toss and elected to bat first on their mat (which is a road), which short boundaries square and a quick outfield. Events got underway in a fashion that NK had come to expect from Laois with opener Sheraz trying to smash every ball he faced out of orbit. To make matters worse, Vossie had Sheraz bowled off a no-ball in his second over and he was dropped soon after that at the other end and the start of NK's bowling innings was looking all too familiar against a side that had plagued North Kildare in the past. Laois raced onto 79 for no loss with just 8 overs gone, but when Gulab was introduced into the attack and got the breakthrough of Sheraz (thanks to a quality steepling catch from Matt O'Meara); himself and Amar went about turning the game on it's head. After the dismissal of Sheraz, it was all NK and the opposition went from scoring at 10 an over to barely managing to get it off the square. At drinks, Laois were 124-4; scoring just 47 runs from their last 16 overs thanks to two brilliant spells from Gulab and Amar who incredibly only took one wicket in his 9 overs. The opposition opener, Tewatic was still at the crease though and seemed to offer a chance an over without being dismissed. At the other end, it wasn't until no.8, Anwar arrived at the crease that the Laois batting innings gained any sort of momentum and if the pair hadn't of shared a 84 run stand; Laois wouldn't have got to 220. Tewatic was eventually run out in the last over for 82 by M.O'M. and thanks to some lower order support from Anwar, Laois had made a good score of 270-8 from their 45 overs.

With a target of 270, the seconds were well aware that their task was not going to be easy, but they were also aware that 270 was by no means a daunting total when out in the middle of a batting paradise that Laois provides.

The North Kildare batting innings could not have started any brighter. Walshe and Melissa opened up and dispatched anything that was thrown at them during the opening overs and the pair grew in confidence the longer that batted together. Melissa chose the aerial route with Walshe choosing to keep the ball on the ground and target the short square boundaries. After 20 overs, NK had reached 127-0 thanks to the awesome stand and platform that the pair had provided. Melissa was eventually bowled for a beautifully made, quickfire 59 that set up the NK chase perfectly. Melissa's dismissal brought in-form, Mark to the crease and himself and Walshe remained positive and aggressive until Walshe was finally dismissed for 69 - a cracking knock from the Doog who wanted to celebrate his 50th birthday with another half century. Vossie then joined Mark, but his innings was cut short from a decision that went against him when he got a shocking leg-side ball that clipped his thigh pad on the way through to the keeper, but was adjudged caught behind to add to Vossie's woes that day. Marko (who looked in fine form yet again for the seconds) was greeted by Sandy, but Sandy's innings was short lived and he went for just 16. Mattie O'Meara was given an opportunity higher up the order and took full advantage by adding 55 with Marko in very quick time, playing the aggressor as Marko put the bad ball away and played anchor at the other end. The youngster smashed a brisk 36 and when he was dismissed, NK needed just 24 runs for victory with plenty overs to spare. Marko felt that it was time to finish off the game and knocked off the required runs with ease and brought NK to a smashing 4 wicket victory in what was a close to perfect run chase, started by Walshe and Melissa and finished off with a quality captain's knock from Mark and some high quality stroke playing from Matt O'Meara.

The seconds are now 2 & 1 in the league and have showed the strength of the club having to bring four players the night before a game and still winning comfortably against a side who are also looking for promotion.

Thanks to two quality spells of bowling from Gulab and Amar, some excellent fielding from Melissa and Vossie; and a cracking batting display the whole way down the order - the seconds are now up to second in the table and will the result will be the start of a big run in the league with plenty fixtures to come in the coming weeks.
