Laois 1 v North Kildare Cricket Club Men's 1st XI on Sat 29 Aug 2015 at 12.00
North Kildare Cricket Club Won By 7 Wickets (24/25pts)

Match report Following on from the huge disappointment of a washout against Phoenix - NK were on the road for their final away game of the season against the familiar foe - Laois. Before a ball was bowled, NK sat in the middle of the table and nothing less than a win would keep their promotion campaign alive. Beforehand however - Disco had to pull out with Barra coming into replace him and Vossie Jnr was uncharacteristicly half an hour late - Vossie Snr rumoured to have taken a detour to photograph clouds and scope out his campsite for Electric Picnic the following weekend...

Bob won the toss and elected to bowl first for the fourth game in a row; a tactic that had been hugely successful over that short period of time. Less than 10 overs later, Louis and PR had knocked out the Laois top order and the opposition sat 17-4 from 7.3 overs and the firsts were all over their midland rivals. More importantly; the wickets that fell were that of Ramazan and Meraj - both falling for single figures as in the reverse fixture - and both falling to PR in consecutive deliveries. Despite a stand of 42 from Smit & Siddiqi, the firsts continued to boss their opposition with Louis bowling a quality first spell with excellent control, hostility and raw pace. At the other end, PR had the opposition completely restrained and resulted in Paulie ending with rather tidy figures of 10-4-15-3, dismantling the opposition's top order in the process. Wazzie, Imran, Manny and Louis were swapped around at different ends by Bob who used his bowlers brilliantly, with every change seeming to result in a wicket. Mention must go to Louis for his second spell that was far too good for his former club's batting lineup to handle. Mention to Bob also, who nearly lost the entire right half of his body when Louis bowled his quickest ball of the day that was far too quick for anyone to get near. Due to a sensational overall bowling performance from the NK attack which was backed up well in the field by taking just about every catch - NK had bowled Laois out for a mere 118 - a similar Laois side that had posted 399 against the first just a couple of seasons prior. The first half performance highlighted the gulf in standard that had opened up between the midland sides over the course of a year.

So - NK were a run chase away from defeating Laois for the second time in a matter of weeks thanks largely to the brilliance of NK with the ball - PR, Louis and Manny in particular. With a few showers around (showers in Laois?hard to believe, I know...), NK were wary that the rain might interfere with their second innings, so Wazzie and Manny looked to get NK off to a quick start just in case.

The firsts got off to a relatively solid start through Manny and Wasif, but when Laois' opening bowler, Shaukat went over in a heap because of the wet mat, there were fears that the rain may just influence another huge game for the second week in a row. After a quick break following a heavy shower, Shauket went over again. This time; removing Wazzie's off-stump in the process for the second game in a row from a good yorker. This followed a very frustrating period for NK, as there was a 20 minute delay (during the most pleasant spell of the game) because Shaukat was uncomfortable coming down on the mat that didn't really look as treacherous as the opener had been making out. Play eventually resumed with Manny and PR out in the middle with the pair already needing less than a hundred runs. While the two were together at the crease, it looked for all the world as if NK would win by full points with a 9-wicket victory. The pair were dismissive of the opposition bowling attack and quickly knocked off the required runs with ease. It wasn't til Smit grabbed a very sharp catch off the bowling of Siddiqi that Manny untimely departed for another beautifully made 31 in which he looked as classy and in-control as ever. In-form Dollars then joined PR and was off the mark immediately with a great deal of fortune; nearly chopping on. Dalts was soon dismissed for single figures (yes, you did read that correctly) which saw TS stride to the middle to knock off the remaining 23 runs with PR. The pair did exactly this, cruising to a 7 wicket victory - PR reaching his seventh half-century this season (which was incredibly his first not out this season) - and NK moving up to second in the table in the process.

MOTM award can only go to one man - PR. Having removed Ramazan, Meraj and Hurr, leaving the opposition at 14-4 as well as taking two excellent catches wasn't enough for PR who then decided to smoke a quickfire 50 that got his side over the line with style and not for the first time this season.

The rampant North Kildare first team that has showed up in the previous three league games are now just one "tick" away from acheiving the goal they had set after the huge disappointment following the back-to-back home defeats. The firsts have clicked into a different gear over the last couple of weeks and are highlighting their division 2 credentials if the firsts are to either stay in second place or be provided with the option to potentially go up regardless.

Any support for the final league game of the season against the Hills next weekend would be hugely appreciated in what could be a record breaking day for NK if other results are to fall in their favour.
