North Kildare Cricket Club Men's 1st XI v Dundrum 1 on Sun 31 May 2015 at 13.00
North Kildare Cricket Club Won By 124 Runs

Match report The firsts played host to Dundrum for the second season in a row in the Senior 2 Cup. After a lackluster performance that resulted in a 9 wicket thumping at the hands of Leinster the week before; NK were determined to bounce back immediately and get another cup run going against a side that NK had, had their difficulties with in the past.

After a technical issue with the covers, the grass wicket that had been prepared was no longer fit for a game of cricket. The mat had to suffice and although NK would've much preferred to put Dundrum in on a grass wicket; there were no complaints when Bob won the toss and elected to bat first. Bob and Manny got NK off to a solid start yet again. Although the pair only added 35 for their opening stand, both looked at ease at the crease and had set another good platform for NK to go on to get a big total. Manny fell having made 19, which brought Paulie Ryan out to the crease. The following partnership laid the foundation for NK to potentially go wild in the last ten. Bob and PR added 90 together at a quick pace before Rob was given out LBW and was on his way for a well made 38 - more runs at the top of the order for the in-form skipper. PR was greeted by Imran with 16 overs still left in the innings and with the likes of Satch and Wazzie down the order; NK were looking seriously good to post an imposing total. PR - who looked in seriously good nick yet again was run out immediately after Bob fell though which was untimely; but thankfully at the end of the 40 overs it wasn't as costly at it might've been... What happened after Paul was dismissed was a barrage and a vicious assault on leather with large chunks of wood (wielded by Tom and Imran) that dominated the opposition attack who were made to look silly at times. The pair added 62 in rapid time and this was before Tom had properly got going. Imran fell for a quickfire 37 which saw Vossie arrive at the crease - joining a possessed TS who was tired of scratching around at a strike rate of 140... At 188-3 with just over 6 overs left, the firsts were nearly assured of 220/230 - a score that NK would've been happy with before the innings, but Satch had other intentions. 6 overs and 93 runs later, NK had posted a whopping 281-5 from their 40 thanks to a sensational 95*(45) from Satch - displaying some of the cleanest striking of the cricket ball that has been witnessed at NK. There were plenty of favourites to chose from, but the pick of the lot was the six that was launched over the clubhouse and into the car park (no vehicles were damaged to Tom's dismay) slightly outdoing Paul's ridiculous straight six that cleared the trees at the other end earlier in the innings.

So - the firsts had racked up their highest total of the season so far from a brilliant display at the top of the order from Bob and Paulie in particular. Bob; playing the anchor role and Paulie; taking the attack to the opposition put together the all important stand that set NK up for a massive total. Without the foundation that the pair had built, it wouldn't have been possible for Tom and Imran to play as freely as they did which ultimately resulted in the demolition of the Dudrum attack. Also; thanks to some intelligent batting from Loui late on in the innings, Tom was able to face the large bulk of the strike which was a key factor in getting up to 280 and forcing the oppo to score at 7 an over from ball one if they were to chase down their target.

After a terrific first innings, NK took to the field and Satch had the new ball in his hands for the first time in two seasons. Charging in with the wind behind him, Satch removed opener Hipplotus with only his second delivery - a massive wicket as the Dundrum opener had just come off a huge ton in the National Cup - not to mention his run-a-ball 77 that he had scored against NK the previous season in the same competition. Things got even better for the firsts when Clint removed Dundrum no.3 and at 9-2; NK had the opposition in deep trouble. This was followed by Dundrum's biggest partnership of their innings between opener Boddu and Thambi who went hard while hitting with the wind. The pair added 56 together before both were removed at opposite ends which left Dundrum rocking at 65-4. The introduction of Manny and PR was to be the death of the Dundrum innings though. The pair took 5 wickets between them in no time and despite a half century From Thomas batting at 6, the oppo batting lineup had no answer for the "spin kings". Wickets fell regularly and things eventually came to an end when Thomas fell for an excellent 54, showing great resilience and application when wickets tumbled around him. Alas, Thomas' effort was in vain as NK had bowled their opposition out in the 33rd over and have booked themselves another quarter final having thumped Dundrum by 124 runs.

Thanks to a ridiculous knock from Tommie, another half century from Paulie Ryan and a quality innings for the NK bowling attack - NK had gotten the Leinster monkey off of their back and will now look to gather momentum and consistency in the coming weeks. The firsts have a midweek clash against Malahide in the Tillian Cup next Monday and will then face potentially the toughest game of the season so far against a top opposition in Pembroke. If the firsts can come away with two wins, the momentum train will be well and truly rolling and NK can get their season on track to success.

A big thanks to Gerry for scoring on such short notice and to Jenny for finally making it to NK - just before Tom unleashed in front of plenty of NK supporters who braved the cold to support the lads. One can hope that the supporters who came down in number will not have seen the last of such a quality displays of cricket like what was on show against Dundrum.
