Civil Service 1 v North Kildare Cricket Club Men's 1st XI on Mon 18 May 2015 at 18.00
North Kildare Cricket Club Won By 85 Runs

Match report The firsts ventured to Phoenix Park for the second time in two days to play Civil Service in the Tillain Cup. The firsts were fully confident that they could get their second win under their belt in as many days, particularly with the record they had against their opposition.

On arrival, it wasn't clear if the firsts had just arrived to a pre-season winter net or to a game of cricket... To describe how cold it was; Louis and Vossie decided to race each other from long-on to long-on in between overs in the second innings and were happy to do so as it was the only way to heat themselves up.

Back to the game... Rob won the toss for the second game in a row and decided to bat first on a track that looked as if 120 would be a decent total - a track that looked very similar to the one the firsts had played on the day before against Phoenix. Thanks to a flying start from Rob and Manny, 120 looked to be a huge under achievement if that was what the firsts were to end on. Rob and Imran were to make sure there was to be no under achieving. Rob laid the platform with more runs at the top of the order; most likely because he hadn't used his broken bat for the second game in a row - Rob now paying Louis 5 euro a day to use his bat and Imran tore the opposition to all parts with a sensational 21 ball 50. Rob's 62(54) and Imran's 52*(22) balls along with some good backup from Manny, PR and Tom saw the firsts reach a whopping 199-3 from their 20 overs - three runs more than what they scored the day before in 45 overs for the loss of just 3 wickets.

So - Service required 200 from 20 overs at 10 runs an over - a daunting task for any opposition. NK had produced a stellar first innings, but knew that their opposition had players who could maybe trouble this mammoth score and were aware that a second innings of the same quality was required to make sure there were to be no nervy moments; particularly with some of the worst fielding and bowling conditions anyone could ever wish for.

After the first over of the second innings, it was clear to NK and to the NK attack that the opposition were not going to die wondering. Opener, A. Sayyah smashed 14 off Wazzie's first which may have led to the oppo wondering: "What if?" However, after the first over it was all North Kildare. Wickets fell in clusters, the NK attack were disciplined, gave very little away and varied things up that led to a convincing victory in the end - NK ending up as winners by a 85 run margin of victory. All five bowlers used were exceptional, but it was Wasif and Clint who were of the highest quality opening up which put massive pressure on the opposition taking five wickets between them and going at less than 6 an over while doing so.

Huge credit to both teams for sticking out the horrendous conditions as well as the umpires for allowing the game to go on. There would have been many an umpire that would've been in their car and on their way home (for good reason) after the first shower, but the full 40 overs were played and a good game of cricket was had - particularly for North Kildare who have progressed to the next round of the Tillain Cup having displayed some high quality cricket all round.

The firsts now have a double weekend approaching with Drummond away in the National Cup on Saturday and Clontarf away on Sunday. Two huge games for the firsts and two games that would be a delight to win.
