North Kildare Cricket Club Men's 1st XI v Y.M.C.A. 2 on Wed 03 Sep 2014 at 5.00pm
North Kildare Cricket Club Won By 7 Wkts (24/25pts)
Match report
The firsts welcomed second-place, YM to the Maws on a pleasant evening that was ideal for the t20 refix - a refix that seemed to take forever to go ahead.
Neavyn lost the toss and YM elected to bat first in what the firsts thought was going to be a vital toss to win. With just one run on the board, YM lost their first wicket thanks to a brilliant direct hit that sent McDonagh on his way - a run out that set the tone immediately for the firsts. Opener, Murphy and ex Irish international, Angus Dunlop shared a stand worth of 48 for the second wicket, but it took them nearly 13 overs to do so with the NK attack completely strangling the opposition. Once the second wicket stand was broken, YM continued to lose wickets because of the sheer pressure that NK had put the opposition under with some quality bowling and good support in the field. Gulab, Manny and Imran were all excellent with the ball and picked up 7 wickets between the three of them. In the end, YM couldn't even reach the hundred mark and NK could be proud of their first innings efforts. YM could only reach 93 in their 20 overs, which was an extremely low total batting on a mat with a decent outfield.
Thanks to an exceptional bowling performance as well as some excellent captaincy from Rob (who didn't get a fielding placement wrong in the entire innings), the firsts were just 20 overs away from putting their 6th league win on the board and beating a team that were above NK in the table.
Gilly (playing his last game for NK) and Wazzie opened up, but Wazzie's woes facing spin continued when he went for a golden duck to offy opener, Merchant. Gilly soon went playing one shot too many, but he went out with a positive attitude and looked to take the attack to the opposition from ball one. Shortly after that, TS was then bowled by Flanagan from a good yorker. At 27-3 from 5, the firsts had made things difficult for themselves, but when Imran was dropped on single figures (in which the fielder also knocked the ball over the rope), things were over shortly after as Immy went on to blast a 49-ball 60* in which he racked up 8x4's and 2x6's - making YM pay for not taking the only chance he offered. At the other end, Marko got himself a sneaky little not out and supported Imran well when there may have been a tumble of wickets. As a result - NK cruised to victory and only lost the one bonus point in doing so.
The firsts now move up to third in the table thanks to a domineering performance which hopefully can be produced again against the same opposition this Sunday. If the firsts can win their last couple of games, there is still an outside chance of the firsts going up, but NK will need results to go in their favour if that were to happen.
On one sour note, the YM game was Gilly's last for NK and he will be sorely missed by the club for all that he has brought to North Kildare this season. The firsts will be losing an extremely talented cricketer and one that has made a massive difference in the success that NK have had this year. From all at NK - we wish you the very best, we wish you a safe flight home and we wish to see you play for NK one day again in the future.
