Civil Service 1 v North Kildare Cricket Club Men's 1st XI on Sat 12 Jul 2014 at 13:00
North Kildare Cricket Club Won By 10 Runs (20/25pts)
Match report
The firsts traveled to Phoenix Park in hope of recording their second league win of the season. The opposition: Civil Service, had lost all four of their league games this year and NK were well aware of the threat they posed as well as the weaknesses they could target.
Neavyn lost the toss (yes - you did read that correctly) and the oppo chose to put NK in on a pitch that looked to be bowler friendly. The firsts had an all too familiar start to their batting innings, losing Rob and Tom in consecutive balls. Imran then joined Walshe, but the Doog was soon on his way back to the changing room. Vossie greeted Imran and the pair looked to rebuild the innings. They shared a good spell and put the pressure back on Service, but it ended all too soon when Immy played a bit of a lazy shot and was caught at cover - a massive wicket, as Imran looked in fine touch during his 35, in which he hit 7 boundaries. Gilly came and went, which saw NK battling on 82-5 at drinks. Straight after drinks, things got even worse for NK, when Manny popped one straight up to mid-wicket as the ball just held up a little in the track. Waqqas then joined Vossie at the crease and the pair batted slowly, but got the score well past 100. Vossie went for a sluggish, but much needed 27, in which he was at the crease for the large part of 25 overs. Next man in was Wazzle and Wazzle did what Wazzle does best - have a bash... Waqqas and Wazzie got NK up to 168 before Wazz was bowled by opener, Siddique, who finished strongly, bowling Wazzle, Ahmad and Gulab in quick succession. Regardless - NK finished on a very competitive score of 194 A/O, thanks largely to Waqqas who made a desperately needed 41* to get the firsts to a decent total. Waqqas showed exactly how to bat on a slow track and dug NK out of a hole thanks to his application and concentration at the crease.
So - with 194 on the board, NK knew that they were well in the game but also knew that the task ahead was not going to be easy. Waqqas and Ahmad opened up and it was Ahmad who got the early breakthrough to the dismay of Waqqas at the other end who was bowling one of the best opening spells you could ask for, with no reward. Opener and oppo skipper, Webster was joined by Siddique - a player that NK were well aware of and knew that he had the ability to take the game away from NK if he were to get going. The pair shared a stand of 46, but when Gulab got Siddique, the innings changed rapidly. Service went from 92-3 to 95-7 in the space of just three overs due to two excellent spells of bowling from the Singh brothers - Manny and Gulab. At this stage, NK were right on top but were aware to the danger of the Service lower-order. NK had to be patient in the wait for their 8th wicket, but when it came, the firsts were confident that they could wrap things up fairly sharpish, but with the rain coming down and interfering with the play as well as being a man down, Service got away a little. There was then a little bit of relief, as danger man, Tanveer holed out to Manny Singh which meant that NK were just one wicket away. Well - what followed next was to be a tense and nail-biting finish... at least for NK that is. Oppo no.10 and 11 shared a stand of 30 for the 10th wicket and looked as if they were going to pull a win out of thin air. Nevertheless - Neavyn had another trick up his sleeve. Vossie came on and got the vital wicket, which saw NK sneak home in the end by just 10 runs.
Thanks to an excellent knock from Waqqas in the first innings and some sheer brilliance from Manny and Gulab with the ball, NK record their second league win of the season against an oppo who are now in a very sour position on the league table.
Next up for the firsts is a visit from the Hills who are also low down in Div.3. Hopefully the firsts can get a streak together during a period in which there'll be no lack of cricket.
