Clontarf 2 v North Kildare Cricket Club Men's 1st XI on Mon 23 Jun 2014 at 18:00
North Kildare Cricket Club Lost By 4 Wickets
Match report
On a glorious summers' evening, the firsts traveled to Castle Avenue in search of a performance that would put them into the final of the Tillain Cup.
Neayvn won the toss for the second day running, but chose to bat in this instance on an excellent looking grass wicket. With huge boundaries, but a fast outfield and good track, a par score was set to be within the region of 140-150. Mark and Michael started brightly, but when Michael went caught behind in what he felt was a questionable decision, there was a slight tumble of wickets - Imran going for just 8 - Wazzle going first ball to the disbelief of the NK support. Tom batted in usual fashion during his 28, which included two mammoth sixes - one cracking straight drive and one over cow, which was probably the longest part of the ground. Rob, Manny and Walshe didn't really contribute as much as NK would've liked, as the innings never really got a move on. A decent couple of death overs from Vossie and Manny, got NK up to 123 which was well below par, but one of those scores that has proven to cause serious upsets in the past.
In reply, Wazzle got the massive breakthrough in his first over, bagging the dangerous, Altaf, who had already put NK to the sword once this season. It was 5 overs before NK had their next wicket, but in the meanwhile, Clontarf were going at a rate that kept NK in the game. After 17 overs, NK had managed keep things interesting as Clontarf had reached 102-5, needing 22 from their last three overs. In the last three, NK would've needed to have bowled exceptionally well with a great share of luck if they were to pull off an astounding feat in defending 123. To the heartbreak of the NK support as well as the NK 11, Clontarf reached their target with just three balls to spare, which doesn't really tell the story of how close the game actually was. If luck had been on NK's side, a couple of airy shots that fell into space, would've gone to hand and would've changed the complexity of the game completely. A mention has to go to Gulab, who went for just 13 runs in his five over spell, which was the biggest factor in NK making such a game in a contest that we had no right to get close in after our first innings.
In truth - getting 123 batting first was always going to put too much pressure on the bowling and fielding unit, but NK can hold their heads high for even managing to reach the final over of the game. In the end, the difference between the two teams was the awareness that Clontarf had over NK in terms of how the track would play and how to use the length of the boundaries in running between the wickets - something Clontarf did excellently to their credit.
Cup exit aside, if the firsts can carry their excellence in the field from their t20 campaign to their 50 over game, there may still be every chance of NK lifting silverware before the season is over.
