Dundrum 2 v North Kildare Cricket Club Men's 2nd XI on Sun 29 Jun 2014 at 13.00
North Kildare Cricket Club Lost by 4 wickets
Match report
The seconds traveled to Dundrum in their Middle 2 cup tie, the day after beating league leaders, Knockharley at the Maws.
Just for a change, Dollars lost the toss for one of the first times this season, but losing the toss actually played into NK's hands as half of the team arrived late to the ground. Dollars and Walshe opened up and the pair continued their good form at the top of the innings with their second stand of 50+ in two games. Walshe fell for 21 and Dollars was greeted by Vossie. Dollars and Voss then batted til drinks, running the opposition ragged, turning 1's into 2's and 2's into 3's and even at drinks, the pair had the opposition struggling for answers. After drinks though, Vossie and Dollars both fell within two overs of each other which really shifted the authority NK had over Dundrum. Dáire O'Neill arrived at the crease when Vossie fell and it was only when Andy Chase went out to the middle that the seconds regained some sort of stability. At drinks, the seconds were 81-1, after 26, the seconds had slumped massively to 90-5 in a innings changing collapse that NK only had themselves to blame for. Andy and Daz added 36 together before Dazzler went for a sluggish, but massively needed 21. Andy went slowly at the start of the season, but finished on 28 not out which were vital runs in reaching a below par, but competitive(ish) score of 156-6. Andy hit two enormous 6's in his 28 and his late surge along with some great support from Muddassair saw NK reach respectability.
So - for the second day and third game in a row, Dollars fell just shy of a well-deserved 50. And for the second day in a row, NK failed to capitalise on another excellent start from Doog and Dollars and yet again, threw away their position of authority after drinks.
Dundrum started in predictable fashion and if it wasn't for Vossie being ten yards in off the boundary rope at cow first ball (as requested by skipper, Dollars), opener Sharma would've smashed the ball right down his throat. Andy did get his man though in the sixth over, as Sharma swung violently at one outside off, only to nick off to a grateful skipper. An over later, NK had their second and a slight bit of hope was kindle. Dáire O'Neill bagged himself a couple of big wickets up the top of the order, but at the rate Dundrum were going at, NK knew that they needed to bowl the opposition out. At 90-4 from 17, there was a decision that went against NK that could've easily changed the whole complexity of the game. Opposition skipper, Jinto Mathew (who was by far Dundrum's best bat), was trapped right in front by Vossie which was turned down by the umpire to the disbelief of the seconds. Mathew went on to score 56* as he saw his side home, reaching the semi-final of the Middle 2 in the process. Having seen the lower order, the decision that wasn't given was of vital importance and there may have been a much different outcome if it were to have gone NK's way.
With the result, the seconds bow out of the Middle 2 Cup in disappointing fashion having only really failed with the bat, but didn't do a whole lot wrong apart from that.
The seconds now have the Dick O'Neill to play for in which NK are the holders as well as fully concentrating on the league. Next up for the seconds is an away trip to either Wicklow or Ashbourne in the Dick O'Neill - two teams that NK shouldn't have much trouble in beating.
