North Kildare Cricket Club Men's 2nd XI v Sandyford 1 on Sat 19 Jul 2014 at 13.30pm
North Kildare Cricket Club Won by 10 wickets (25/25 points)

Match report The seconds awaited a visit from Sandyford on an overcast and humid day at the Maws - a game of utmost importance, as a win would go a long way to helping the seconds get out of the bottom two.

Dollars lost the toss and to the delightful shock of the NK players - the oppo skipper elected to bat first on what looked to be an out-and-out bowlers' wickets along with very favourable bowling conditions. It wasn't long into the first innings that NK knew that they had lost a very good toss. After just 7 minutes on field, Sandyford were 0-2 thanks to a brilliant run-out from Rich Withey firstly and then Andy got one at the other end from a delivery that held up in the track and went straight to a grateful, Zeb. No. 3 - Arora, was a familiar face and NK knew his wicket was of vital importance. Arora and Padmanaban shared a stand of 32 to steady the ship slightly for Sandyford, but Gilly seemed to be in the mood to rock the boat. Both no.3, Arora & no.4, Padmanaban were removed by Gilly in consecutive balls and Gilly's rocking of the boat didn't stop there. On his hat-trick ball, the oppo no.6 (to his credit) did a very good job of keeping it out, but it was just an over later that Michael sent him on his way - Sandyford battling on 39-5 at this point. Gilly bowled straight through his overs and the Sandford batsmen really didn't have an answer for him. Finishing with figures of 9-4-20-3 would usually put a smile on your face, but, in truth, there could've easily been a couple more digits added to the wicket column. At 39-5, this would be the sort of position that NK would usually take the foot off the accelerator and let the oppo get away a little, but there was to be no such mistake this time. Thanks to some excellence with the ball and a high standard of support from the bowlers (at least for the most part), NK bowled Sandyford out for a massively below par: 88 A/O. Even in the bowler friendly conditions, the wicket didn't play that much of a part and the NK attack were just streets ahead of the oppo lineup. All five bowlers used were in the wickets and with two run-outs, the seconds were well and truly delighted with their first innings performance - so delighted that they even decided to relay the ball for their second run-out - no one really wanting to whip the bails off, as the ball was passed from Matt onto Dollars and then finally onto Gilly, but anyway, the batsman was on his way nonetheless.

Because Sandyford were bowled out so quickly, the seconds had ten minutes to slap their pads on and go out for the second innings.

After complaining about his hunger before going out to bat, Gilly looked to get a move on out in the middle. Less than an hour later, Gilly and Richie had their feet up and were scoffing down sandwiches as they had knocked off their target in just 12.2 overs. Gilly (who had his wand returned to him), bashed the oppo around smashing 8 boundaries during his 50*, which was his maiden half-century for NK. Richie quietly went about his business at the other end and finished with a sneaky little 25* - NK cruising to victory by 10 wickets, which is the second time they've achieved that feat this season.

After a terrific performance once more in the league, the seconds should hopefully move up from the dreaded relegation zone and if they can continue their league form, there is every chance that NK could turn a few heads towards the back end of the season. With 5 league games remaining (as well a possible refix), the seconds may just quietly creep up the league table and who knows where they could finish if they're to win their remaining fixtures and have a few results go their way. As Napoleon once said: “Ability is of little account without opportunity.”
