North Kildare Cricket Club Men's 2nd XI v Knockharley 1 on Sat 28 Jun 2014 at 13.30pm
North Kildare Cricket Club Won By 71 runs (23/25 points)
Match report
The seconds faced a visit from undefeated league leaders, Knockharley. A win from their outing would see them make good ground on the teams above them and possibly see them leap out of the bottom two.
Dollars won the toss, yet again and chose to bat first on the mat. Michael and Dollars opened up and started well. Gilly took the attack to the opposition during his 29, which was nearly at a run-a-ball. Their partnership was broken when Gilly popped one back to spinner, Rashid - one that Michael would have deposited into the trees 99 times out of 100. Dollars was joined by Vossie and the pair laid a very solid foundation to go on to make a score passed 200+. Both Dollars and Vossie started slowly, but as their innings progressed, they began to play more freely and went at 5-an-over during their partnership of 67 which ended with the score on 114-2 from 26 overs - Dollars going for a well-made 48 which involved a fair share of grit and determination as he was bowled off a no-ball early doors and then hit in the jaw, trying to hook a short one. Andy and Gulab came and went without contributing much and Vossie was then joined by Ger. At this point, Vossie was throwing his bat at everything, but the ball just wasn't finding the boundary and Ger struggled early on. Vossie went when he tried to pull a bumper, but could only find square-leg. Vossie looked in good touch during his 62 which included 7x4's - an innings that was desperately needed on a personal note. Happy arrived at the crease with Ger and he too went quickly. Although the NK innings had stalled quite a bit after drinks, NK reached a competitive score of 188-6 from their 45.
At the halftime stage, NK were a small bit disappointed that they didn't reach 200+ after they platform they built for a big first innings total. However, they knew that 188-6 was more than competitive and if NK could knock over the top 3/4 early on, they would have every chance of running through their opposition lineup.
Michael took the first over and, well, with his first ball of the innings, he produced an absolute pearler to remove the ever dangerous, Bellew who has put NK to the sword on more than one occasion. Three overs later, Gilly removed Knockharley's other opener with a similar nut, swinging, on a good length and just unplayable for most batsman. The next wicket to fall was a suicidal run-out that saw the in form, Ingamells depart for just 18, the score now on 36-3 and then 39-4 in the next over - Michael, yet again producing some of his finest, yorking no.4, Rashid and sending his middle-stump cartwheeling into Maynooth. At 39-4, NK were right on top, but Knockharley's captain and a capable no.5 were still at the crease and the pair would always threaten the closer they got to their target. They had a short stand worth 22, but Knockharley's skipper, Craik was removed brilliantly by Gulab, who drew Craik into a shot outside off, which he nicked off and Vossie held sharply at second slip to the delight of Barra who couldn't contain his excitement for the level of NK's 'proper cricket'. 61-5, then became 63-6 and NK knew that they were nearly there. No.5, Ingamells and no.8, Shivmangal had an annoying stand worth 16 which came off 10 full overs. When Vossie removed Shivmangal with a flighted, turning delivery that beat no.8 all ends up, Gary Hunt did the difficult part by quickly whipping off the bails which saw his 11(46) come to an end as he tried coming down the track in search of quick runs one could only imagine. At this point, the score went from 89-7 to 89-9 in the space of just 5 balls - Gulab doing the bulk of the damage. The final wicket took some time to come, but Barra finally got his man as no.9, Condie top-edged one straight up in the air which Gary joyfully snaffled, NK running out winners by 71 runs.
A mention must go to Micheal for his brilliance with the ball early doors, which was excellently supported by Gulab who finished his nine overs with 4 wickets for just 24 runs. Batting wise, Dollars continues his excellent form at the top of the order and Vossie is finally back in the runs which will be needed as the season progresses. The overall fielding was at a continuously high standard throughout the second innings, but Richard Withey may have just taken the spotlight with his excellence in the field throughout the entire innings, just ahead of Gary Hunt who showed the importance of what having a good keeper does in the field.
NK have now recorded their second league win of the season against the favourites to win the league this season in a flawless performance that made the league leaders look very ordinary. If the seconds can match their performance in coming weeks, there is still every chance that the twos can get a string of wins together and climb up div.6 which no one is one of the tightest divisions in Leinster.
