Rush 2 v North Kildare Cricket Club Men's 2nd XI on Sat 14 Jun 2014 at 13.30pm
North Kildare Cricket Club Lost by 8 wickets (1/25 points)
Match report
The seconds traveled to Rush, fully confident that they could extend their winning streak to a third game in a row.
Dollars won the toss and elected to bat on what looked to be a very good grass wicket and what proved to be a lightning fast outfield.
North Kildare started exceptionally well. Thanks to a first wicket stand of 81 between Walshe and Dollars and another stand worth of 60 between Vossie and Walshe, NK set a platform for the lower order to score quickly and freely without having to worry about a collapse. Unfortunately, when the top 3 departed, there weren't as many contributions down the order as NK would've liked. Between the top three, 127 of NK's 228 were scored. At 141-2 with 13 overs to spare, NK would've liked to have reached 250+, but apart from a rapid 17 from Wazzie and a very helpful 31(24) from Ger, there wasn't a great deal to shout about. In truth, with the track playing well and with an outfield that was as quick as anything you'd see, a total of 228 was a solid effort, but it was deemed to be below par. In NK's first innings, Walshe reached 56, Dollars fell just short of his first 50 for the season and Vossie got a start but all three failed to go on which played a part in NK being bowled out in the end on the last ball of the innings.
Wazzle and Andy Chase took the new ball and it was Andy who got the breakthrough in his third over, bowling E. Sheehan with a brilliant yorker - a big wicket as oppo opener looked in fine touch. This followed a stand of 87 between opener, Monks and no.3, Brogan. The pair batted very well at times, but had a massive share of luck during their partnership. Early doors, the pair looked all at sea, in particular when facing Wazzie who may never nick a batsman off as many times as he did Monks, but the ball just did not want to go to hand. Sajjad broke the partnership in the 26th over, but the score had moved onto 120/2 at this stage, meaning that NK needed wickets and quickly if they were to turn things around. Unfortunately, this wasn't to be. Opener Monks reached his ton and P. Sheridan looked as if he needed to catch a flight as he smashed 50 from 29 balls, but offered a couple of chances - one that NK couldn't take, but at a point where it would've needed something spectacular from NK to turn it around.
Looking back at the performance and the result, the scorecard doesn't really tell an accurate story. The whole NK attack bowled good and tight spells, but it just wasn't NK's day. Credit must be given to the oppo batsman who did grind out tough spells (Monks in particular), but on another day, there could've been every chance that the NK attack would've ran through the top order and the result may have gone the other way.
Next up - Knockharley at home. Knockharley have had a solid start to the season and will be a tough team to come up against, but with a bit of luck on NK's side - if NK bowl similarly to how to do against Rush, there'll be every chance of getting their second league win of the season.
