North Kildare Cricket Club Men's 2nd XI v Longford 1 on Sat 31 May 2014 at 13.30pm
North Kildare Cricket Club Won by 24 runs (21/25 points)

Match report On the first beautiful day for cricket at the Maws this season, North Kildare played host to Longford who were in search of their first win of the season - in a similar position to NK in the league..

Dollars won the toss and strode back to the lads triumphantly with a big grin on his face, stating: "if we won games like I won the toss, we'd be top of the league... oh, yeah - we're batting."

Proceedings started poorly once again for the seconds - Andy Chase going for a blob, clean bowled by opener, Khan. Dollars and new man in, Jack, set about seeing off the decent looking openers and restructuring the innings. They did this well, but batted slowly together during the rebuild. Dollars went for 17, but had done an excellent job by seeing off the openers and making sure there wasn't a collapse along with Jack. He went while wafting outside off-stump and getting a feint nick. Vossie joined Jack and the pair upped the scoring a little, until Vossie picked the only fielder out on the leg-side when he hit one straight down the throat of a grateful deep mid-wicket who will not have an easier catch in his lifetime. Safdar confidently strode out to the middle, with plenty of runs under his belt already this season. Jack was run out for a well-made and unselfish innings of 21 soon after Safdar's arrival, with a little bit of indecision involved. Matt Chase came and went quickly and the score had moved onto a meager 68/5 at drinks. Wazzle then arrived at the crease and did his typical thing - obliterating any bowler that dared to bowl within his ark. Unfortunately, Wazzie's fireworks didn't last as long as the NK crowd would've liked, but he made a quickfire 27 with two enormous sixes over cow; dragging the score past 100 in the process. Ger got to the middle with 15 overs still remaining in the first innings. The pair of Safdar and Ger, then set about accumulating the biggest partnership of the game: a stand worth 74. In this partnership, Safdar reached another half-century for the seconds this year and was looking to push his average back into triple figures again, but fell for another excellent knock of 64, with shots all around the ground and a beautiful straight six. The fact that he was out, will bring his average down to a lowly total of 71 to be exact... The partnership was at a crucial stage in the NK innings and massive credit to Ger who helped Safdar massively in a seldom seen aggressive 30, with a beautiful shot over cover and a cheeky pull-shot that left the oppo bowler scratching his head and kicking the turf as it was supposed to take Ger's head off. Gulab and Amar went cheaply near the end in search of quick runs and Sajjad finished with a not-out and a grin that stretched from ear-to-ear.

In the end, NK finished with a competitive 186/10 from their 45, perhaps slightly below par, but with a bowling attack of NK's caliber; the seconds knew that they were one good innings away from claiming their first league win of the season.

After a scrumptious tea (largely thanks to Ger's BBQ'd chicken wings), Wazzle and Sajjy took the new ball and it was Wazzie who removed both openers with some comprehensive bowling within his first five overs. Dalts then brought Andy on, who removed no.3's off-stump from the ground in his second over. At 35/3 after 13, Longford were wobbling and in desperate need of a partnership. There was a brief stand of 39 for the fourth wicket, but wickets then began to tumble as NK restricted the oppo to 98/7 from 28, thanks to some intelligent field placements from Vossie and a tight second spell from Gulab at the other end. At this point, NK just let up a little and allowed no. 8 & 9 to get away a tad, but were never really going at a rate that frightened NK. Their valiant and resistant partnership of 41 was finally brought to an abrupt halt as Andy Chase came on for his second spell. Longford had mustered 139/8 at this point and dragged proceedings out a little bit longer than NK would've liked, but it was Chaser who finished the innings quickly - wrapping up the tail along with Jack as he bagged himself a 4-four and Jack finished with four catches in the innings. In the end, Longford were bowled out 24 runs short of their required total.

So - the seconds record their first league victory thanks to a decent performance with the bat and a good all-round performance from all of the bowling attack - Chaser and Wazzle in particular. Plenty of positives can be taken from this week, but the seconds know that there will be tougher games awaiting them in weeks to come.

The seconds welcome Dundalk to the Maws next weekend in the Cup and will look to go on a streak if they're to remain competitive this season.

Thanks to all of the support who enjoyed the sunshine alongside the victorious seconds, to all who helped with tea's and a big thank you to AĆne who got more than her fair share of sun while scoring once again today.
