Sandyford 1 v North Kildare Cricket Club Men's 2nd XI on Sat 17 May 2014 at 13.30pm
North Kildare Cricket Club Lost by 5 wickets (3/25 points)

Match report The seconds traveled to Marlay Park in search of their first win of the season on the best day of the Irish year - summer!

Dollars won the toss and elected to bat which seemed to be a no-brainer, playing on an artificial track and what looked to be a decent outfield.

Things got under way in the worst possible fashion. In form, Andy Chase went without facing a ball as there was a slight mix up which resulted in a pretty straight forward run-out. Ger followed soon after which meant that Imran and Vossie were left with some rebuilding to do at 13-2. This wasn't the case, as both Vossie and Immy fell to Sandyford's Burke as the pair felt they needed to go aerial to get any value for their shots, as the outfield that appeared to be fast, was actually incredibly slow which frustrated NK to no-end. At 23-4, the seconds were in serious trouble. Skipper, Dollars and Safdar quietly went about their business and really knuckled down to get NK out of a hole. The pair had a stand of 52 together, but when Dollars fell, it went quickly downhill. Sandy and Behzad both went without troubling the scorers and NK were left at 88-8, in desperate need of salvaging something that may give NK a chance in the second innings. Happy, Gulab and Sajjad gave Safdar the support he needed in eating up balls and giving Safdar the strike when it was possible. NK ended with 158 which was respectable considering the position they were in, which Safdar dug the seconds out of. Safdar demonstrated beautifully how to score runs on a track that was unpredictable and on an outfield that was ridiculously sluggish and sometimes unbelievable at times. He ended up on 83 not-out, which was possibly his best knock for the club at a time when it was most desperately needed.

The seconds who were desperate to get their season up-and-running, knew that they needed to be at their very best with the ball and in the field - a performance that had been displayed in the first home game against Rush sprung to mind.

Sajjad started economically which may have resulted in what came next. Andy Chase came on from the other end and with his very first ball, he produced a beauty to remove opener, Babu for 1. Things then got even better for the seconds, as it was Chase again who removed Boddu in his next over thanks to a great catch from Happy Singh and in the same over, Chase got one to hop off of a good length which hit no.3 in the jaw - never a nice ball to face first up. At 4-2, with the oppo looking rattled, NK knew they were well in with a shout in this game, as Andy Chase was bowling a hostile and fiery opening spell that could have been even better if decisions had gone his way. The wickets came to a halt for a short while, until Dollars produced a moment of magic to run-out Padmanabhan combining well with Sandy who was sharp behind the stumps. At this point, NK were well and truly back in with a chance in the game, but dropped off slightly in intensity which led to the oppo getting away which should never have been allowed. It suddenly became easy for the Sandyford batsman to score freely, with some loose bowling and sloppy ground fielding. Alas - Sandyford cruised to victory for the loss of five wickets with more than 10 overs to spare. Highlight of the innings was Andy Chase who was terrific with the ball, finishing with figures of 7-3-16-3. A great catch from Sandy also deserves a mention.

The seconds failed to capitilise on what was a phenomenal start to the second innings that may have changed the result, but in truth, NK were beaten by the better team on the day, despite a brilliant innings from Safdar and a fiery opening spell from Chase.

North County away in the 20/20 are next up for the seconds on Tuesday. NK will look to put together the better moments of their first three games of the season if they're to cause an upset against div.5 side, North County.
