Y.M.C.A. 2 v North Kildare Cricket Club Men's 1st XI on Sun 07 Sep 2014 at 12.00pm
North Kildare Cricket Club Lost By 6 Wkts (2/25pts)

Match report The firsts traveled to Claremount Road to play YMCA in a vitally important fixture for both sides. Having beaten YM just four days ago, the firsts were full of confidence that they could beat their opposition once again and give themselves an outside chance of promotion going into the last game of the season.

Neavyn lost the toss and the opposition chose to stick NK in on a grass wicket that had been used frequently over the last few weeks. Having seen reports and toss-winnings, a par score was deemed to be within the region of 200. Regardless of how the track would play, the firsts (for the third week in a row), were off to a shaky start when Wazzie was given out, LBW to a questionable decision that put NK on the back foot early. Next man in, Vossie and Rob shared a brief stand that steadied the ship until the 11th over, but when Vossie threw his wicket away and was caught at cover to an easy catch, NK's batting innings plummeted from 32-1 to a shocking 53-8 having lost Imran, TS, Dollars, Mark, Walshe and Rob, who was more than displeased with his LBW decision that looked a tad erroneous to say the least. Manny and Barra (the two batsman now at the crease), kept YM frustrated out in the middle for a further 14 overs, but didn't score many runs in doing so. Manny was eventually bowled by Flanagan for 23 - a knock that showed glimpses of form with the bat from Manny that NK will hope to have back in their last game of the season. Unfortunately for NK - Manny and Barra's efforts' could only get NK up to a bitterly disappointing total of 90 A/O. Because only 39 overs were bowled, NK were straight back out in the middle to get their second innings underway.

The firsts were under no illusion that their batting efforts were in any way good enough and they knew that they would need something very special if they were to salvage something in this game. Wazzie gave NK a glimmer of hope when he removed both oppo openers - the YM total now on 17-2. Tea was taken after 13 overs and NK were treated to a scrumptious Indian meal for tea - one that would've tasted even sweeter if NK could've produced the heroics they needed after the break. Play got back underway and with the very first ball, Markie produced a moment of magic when YM no.3, Sultan drove Manny crisply to Mark at mid-off, only for the NK coach to send him back on his way with a brilliant direct-hit, run out which was exactly what NK needed to give themselves a fighting chance. Unfortunately for NK - this is where the Cinderella story ends. YM went from 29-3 to within 10 runs of their target thanks to a 50 partnership between Jack Tector and Angus Dunlop who showed their qualities in knocking down their target without really offering a proper chance. Tector did eventually offer a chance, but when Wazzie sent him on a way when he took a good catch off his own bowling, YM needed just 8 runs which the younger Tector, Harry, knocked off with two boundaries.

So - the loss guarantees than NK can no longer be promoted. Once again - NK's batting lineup proved to be the firsts' undoing. The lack of application, concentration and determination to score runs when things aren't easy was apparent yet again and will have to be amended before next weekend. Well bowled to Wasif who was excellent with the ball and gave NK a glimmer of hope with his brilliant opening spell.

On a positive note, NK can end their season at home next weekend with a victory when they welcome North County to the Maws. NK have had huge success against County this season, having beaten them thoroughly in the league and in the Tillain Cup. Although County are fighting off relegation, they will most likely come to the Maws with all guns blazing hoping to enact revenge for the two thumpings they've received from NK this season. Objective is simple - win and be 100 per cent sure of playing division 3 cricket again next season or - lose and tempt fate dangerously at the wrong end of the table...
