The Hills 2 v North Kildare Cricket Club Men's 1st XI on Sat 16 Aug 2014 at 12.30pm
North Kildare Cricket Club Lost By 31 Runs (4/25pts)

Match report The firsts traveled to Skerries, full of optimism that they could go on and win their third league game on the trot. On arrival - NK were welcomed to an underage game that seemed to go on forever, meaning that the game started a half-an-hour later than expected.

Neavyn lost the toss yet again and the opposition chose to bat first on a good looking grass wicket with a very fast outfield. Wasif and Gilly opened up and produced one of the finest opening spells (from both openers) that I personally have had the privilege of watching by any NK attack. The pair were in full control, with lines' and lengths' that were impeccable. After 12 overs, The Hills were battling on 21-4 thanks to the start Wazzie and Gilly had produced with the ball, as well as some help from Rob who took an absolute blinder low to his right behind the stumps. With four wickets down, The Hills set about building a partnership to get them back into the game. Thomas Murphy and Brendan Moore - the batsman now at the crease, began to claw their way back into respectability and got their side past 100 after 32 overs. NK had to find the breakthrough and it finally came when Murphy hooked one flat and hard, only to find Vossie who took an excellent catch, diving in front of himself to just get his fingers under the ball before it reached the ground. The breakthrough came and the Hills' batting lineup folded quickly soon after when Moore (who batted well for his 50), was removed soon after thanks to a craking yorker from Gulab. The hills were eventually bowled out for a low total of 142, which left NK thrilled with their first half performance.

Thanks to an exceptional bowling performance from the entire NK attack (all bowlers picking up a couple) and an all-round good fielding performance (apart from a couple of unnecessary over-throws), the firsts were fully confident that they could get their fifth league win on the board after their best performance with the ball all season.

In reply, the opposition had an early breakthrough when Mark edged one to the keeper, who spilled it, only for the ball to pop up to first slip. Vossie joined Rob at the crease and the pair batted well to see off the openers who were doing a bit with the new ball. Murphy was brought into the attack and his first over produced the breakthrough when Rob wafted at one outside off, only to nick off which saw Imran out in the middle. Imran immediately looked in good nick, but when a big shout went up for LBW, Immy had to make his way back up the hill into the pavilion, thanks to a VERY dubious decision which left NK at 40-3. Gilly was next man in and with Vossie at the other end going well, the pair put a little bit of pressure back on the Hills - this was until Gilly smacked one straight to mid-on who ended up hugging the ball, very unconvincingly, but nonetheless, Gilly was on his way. Satch went for a blob and Dawg fell just three balls before drinks to a shot that was out of character. When drinks were taken, NK had reached 70-6, still needing a further 73 runs, but with Vossie still out in the middle along with Dollars who had just arrived, there was still every chance NK could see it through. Unfortunately, after 30 overs were up, Dollars and Vossie had planned to take the attack to the opposition and try to knock off the required runs as quickly as possible. This backfired completed, as the first ball of the 30th over, Vossie went hard at a loose wide ball, only to find an edge which was caught behind for a simple catch - Vossie on his way just 9 short of his half-century. Manny replaced Vossie, but when he tried to go aerial, he popped one straight up to mid-off. Wazzie was caught brilliantly at first slip and at 100-9, the fat-lady had already began to wet her throat. Gulab and Dollars did their best to get closer to the score, but in the end, the firsts fell 31 runs short of their small target which should've been knocked off with ease, ideally with a full points victory.

Once again - the firsts have failed to convert their excellent first innings performance into a victory. There may have been a fair share of poor shots in NK's batting innings, but in truth, the lower order should not have been required when chasing a target such as 143, especially in a side with 9 specialist batsman.

With such a disappointing result, the firsts have now dropped down the table instead of climbing. The firsts will have to bounce back rapidly against Leinster or they could find themselves as relegation candidates. In the same breath, NK still have every chance of promotion, but will have to solidify their batting lineup sooner rather than later if there's to be any hope of that.
