North Kildare Cricket Club Lost By 70 Runs (2/25pts)

Match report The firsts arrived at the Maws on the first miserable day they'd seen at home this season. Then it dawned on them - they were playing Laois...

Neavyn lost the toss and the opposition chose to bat first on a dry NK track - the same track that was used against the Hills the week before. NK started poorly, bowling at least one bad ball an over and after 10, Laois were already in a strong position at 42 for no loss. It wasn't until Wazzle got one to hop off of a length that clattered oppo opener in the face, that NK turned the innings around. Laois went from 62-0 to 62-4 in just four overs which completely shifted the complexity of NK's first innings. Things got even better as Meraj - a man who must have an average of close to, if not more than, 100 against NK was snaffled up by Vossie just 3 balls before drinks for just 9 to the delight of Manny who had his first wicket and to the rest of the team who knew how massive a wicket it was. It was also one of the first times NK held onto him on their first attempt. After drinks, it was all NK. Laois went from 124-5 to 127-9 in another collapse, largely due to some brilliant bowling from Ahmad who had picked up 6 of NK's 9 wickets at this point. Gilly got the final wicket of C. Auret and Laois were bowled out for a well-below par score of 143.

Rob and Mark opened up and got off to a decent start by putting the bad balls away - of which there were plenty of. Mark was trapped in front by Hofmeyr and this turned out to be the turning point in the NK batting innings. After Mark went - Vossie, Imran and Walshe departed without making double figures and Rob followed soon after for 14 - 27-5 at this stage. After this, there isn't much more that needs to be said. Tom got a nasty delivery that popped up viciously off the track, Manny got a first baller and Wazzie too was on his way back to the dressing room after facing just one delivery - Clint Auret picking up a hat-trick in the process. In the end, NK succumbed to 73 all out, despite an excellent 32(27) from Gilly in which he made things look effortless in a situation where wickets were crashing down at the other end. In the end, NK came up 70 runs short of their small target and once again lost a game that was more difficult to lose than to win thanks to some careless shot selection, lack of application and a lack of hunger that needs to be regained as quickly as possible.

So - NK have now lost five home games in a row and will have to bounce back rapidly if they're to avoid relegation struggles later on in the season, after another distasteful and inadequate batting performance from the clubs' first team.

Congratulations to Ahmad on his six-wicket haul who proved to be way too good for the opposition and to Gilly, who set the standard in the field and made things look incredibly easy with the bat when he was up against it. Hopefully performances such as this will result in NK being on the winning side as the season progresses - starting next week away to Leinster.
