North Kildare Cricket Club Men's 1st XI v Ballaghaderreen 1 on Sun 22 Jun 2014 at 1.00pm
North Kildare Cricket Club Lost By 46 Runs
Match report
On a beautiful day at the Maws, the firsts hosted Ballaghaderreen in their first game (apart from a T20) in three weeks.
Skipper Neavyn won the toss and elected to bowl first on the grassy wicket, which seemed to be the correct decision based on the element of unawareness as to how the wicket would play.
The innings started in peculiar fashion. Firstly - Wazzie was extremely un-Wazzie like as the rust from the long break was rather apparent in his first two overs as he struggled to even hit the deck. Secondly - Wazzie was clearly unhappy with the ball he was using, so he decided to ruin it with his spikes which resulted in a comical run-out, thanks to NK's new import, Michael Gilchrist. Thirdly - the ball was replaced and Wazzle very shortly got into his grove and got the second wicket of the game. Tom then removed no.3, Bhuhgt in the next over which was a wicket of some importance judging by the standard of what he showed during his 20(23). At 34-3, NK were right on top and were joined by a familiar face - Raza. The pair of Raza and Yousafzaie (not Ahmad), added 54 together and batted until drinks to the annoyance of the NK attack. At 85-3 at drinks, the game was delicately in the balance and NK knew that they needed a big effort to get into the Ballagh' middle order. Well - in terms of big efforts', the NK attack did not disappoint. After drinks, Ballagh' went from 88-3 to 101-7 in the space of six overs, largely thanks to Markie and Andy Chase who both bowled economically and toiled hard - thoroughly deserving their five wickets between them (3 for Andy, 2 for Mark). It was at this point in the innings that the firsts would go onto rue. Ballagh's, Ahmad Yousafzaie (at least for this weekend), smoked a 27 ball 48, which carried Ballagh' up to a respectable first innings total of 172 A/O, which was probably 50 runs more than what they should've got if Ahmad wasn't allowed to get away.
Regardless of Ahmad's quickfire 48, the firsts had put in a reasonably solid performance with the ball and in the field. Andy Chase was the pick of the bowlers and if it wasn't for a tired last over, he would have been looking at exceptional figures at the end of his eight. Gilchrist also deserves a mention for his efforts in the field - allowing nothing to get past him and taking a tough catch at mid-off in which he made look ridiculously easy.
After tea, NK were well aware of the threat Ballagh' posed with the ball. Unfortunately for the top order, the awareness and defence of that threat did not walk hand-in-hand. After just four overs, NK were in all sorts of trouble, battling at 10-3, having lost Gilchrist, Rob and Manny in a match-changing collapse. Imran and Mark had a small stand worth 29, but when Mark and then Imran departed for a well-made 31(35) balls, it was Satch who looked to dig NK out of a hole, but didn't get much help as Vossie went for a blob an over after Imran was caught. At 76-7 at the fall of Tom's wicket, NK were in desperate need of a partnership. Knowing that NK batted the whole way down to 11, there was an element of hope still left to kindle. Walshe and Dollars added a stand worth 37, but in the end, their partnership was just too late down the order to save NK in what would have been a sensational turn around. Andy went looking to go down fighting, but holed out to cow which wrapped up NK's innings in disappointing fashion - NK coming up 46 runs short.
Looking over the course of the match, there were plenty of positives to take from the game, particular with the ball and in the field, but apart from Imran's 31 and Walshe's 41, there was only one other score in double figures which was ultimately the cause of NK's demise. The highlight of the batting innings was the most technically perfect cover drive from Imran, which was deemed to be the shot of the season by Markie which left the NK crowd 'oooing' and 'ahing'.
After the disappointment of today's outing, the firsts know they can rectify their loss tomorrow in the Tillain Cup against Clontarf. The firsts are just two wins away from lifting the clubs' first silverware for the year and will have to be at their very best to go all the way in the competition.
