North Kildare Cricket Club Men's 1st XI v Clontarf 2 on Sun 04 May 2014 at 12.30
North Kildare Cricket Club Lost By 6 Wickets (2/25pts)

Match report North Kildare firsts hosted Clontarf seconds in their first game of the season. Clontarf, who were tipped as favourites to push for the div.3 title this year, were in rich vein of form coming into the game on the back of a resounding victory. With this in mind, NK knew they were in for a tough game of cricket and were aware that the game could be used as an indication as to the jump in standard from last years' promotion.

The day started brightly with skipper Neavyn winning the toss and opting to bat first. The first innings of the season didn't start so brightly however, with Manny Singh pulling up with a hamstring problem early on which led to him being replaced temporarily by Waqqas, who was playing his first game for the club. Things then took a turn for the worse and NK were in a spot of bother when Waqqas was caught early doors and Rob soon followed suit with a bit of a "nothing" shot which saw the score move to 15-2 after no more than six overs. Vossie and Immy then set about steadying the ship and did so as the pair put together a stand of 51, before Vossie went in search of quick runs, only to pop one up to cover. Mark joined Immy at the crease, but both batsman were soon dismissed - Mark popping one up for an easy catch and Immy spanking a high full-toss straight down long-off's throat. At 90-5, fearing that Manny might not be fit to bat, the firsts were in more than a spot of bother. This was until Satch and Dollars went about their business of getting a competitive total on the board. The pair batted magnificently together in a stand worth 77, which was close to a run-a-ball. Both batsman showed a great deal of control, offered very little in terms of chances and ran their opponents ragged. The stand was finally broken, when Dollars drilled opener, Kirk, to mid-off, in what can only be described as sheer brilliance from fielder, Collier. The ball had seemed to have already passed him, but at the last instant, he stuck a hand out at full stretch and the ball stuck, to the disbelief of the NK support as well as Dollars, who would not have struck many balls sweeter in his life. Tom was then joined by another man making his debut for NK and they added a further 45 together before Raza was caught by Collier who held on to his second of the game. At this point, NK had created an opportunity to put a very decent total on the board, thanks to Tom in particular. At 212-7, Wazzle strode out to the crease and himself and Tom added another stand worth 45 and North Kildare had surpassed their expected score when looking down the barrel at 90-5. Wazzle and Ahmad departed in quick succession, which brought "injured" Manny out to the crease to face the last couple of overs. Manny wobbled out to the middle and dispatched his first ball back over the bowlers head into the trees and followed it up with a questionable, hard run three, which had us all sharing a chuckle. This brought Satch back on strike and he brought up his three figures which had rescued North Kildare and gave them every chance to get their season off to a good start in the league. He batted with brute force, ran extremely well and didn't offer a single chance in his close to flawless century, which was his first of many for the firsts. The only chance he did offer was taken, when he was caught looking to go big once again, but just fell short on this occasion, ending on exactly 100 (4x4's, 6x6's). NK's innings ended on 268 A/O, thanks largely to Satch's heroics with the bat. Astonishingly - Tom's hundred doubled his tally of runs in the entire previous season.

So, after an inspired team-talk and with every confidence that the firsts could defend their slightly above-par first innings, NK looked to take their momentum from the first innings into the second and start well with the ball. This all went to plan, as both Raza and Tom created chances with the ball early doors but were put down in back-to-back overs. Opener "Juno", gave NK a chance an over, it seemed, but for whatever reason, the firsts managed to drop him a total of 7 times in total on his way to a match winning innings of 143, which included 11 sixes in total. Clontarf cruised to victory because of it, in what can only be described as a schoolboy performance in the field, which was made even worse when NK decided to drop second highest scorer, Nazir (44) without scoring a run. North Kildare were shown a lesson in how to field by Clontarf and were reminded once again, that when you drop players of quality, you pay a tall price. Clontarf reached their target in the 44th over, with 6 wickets to spare which wrapped up an embarrassing innings and a day to forget for the firsts at the Maws.

The firsts face Carrickfergus in their next encounter up North and will look to rectify their mistakes and take the positives from the batting display with them on their travels. In a positive note - things can only improve for the firsts, as they look to get their season up and running in the following weeks.
