North Kildare Cricket Club Men's 2nd XI v Galway on Sun 18 Aug 2013 at 13:00
North Kildare Cricket Club Won by 35 runs

Match report After reaching the Dick O'Neill final in unconventional fashion, the seconds traveled close by to Clongowes where Galway awaited.

Things took a while to get underway, as there were no stumps, no boundary markers and.. no electricity. Things eventually got going, an hour late according to the umpires.

Before things got underway, Vossie had won the toss for only the second time this season and chose to bat. The decision was based on the mat and short boundaries, but the the outfield looked as if it hadn't been cut for a while, taking proper cricket almost out of the game.

Dollers and Pargat opened up and got NK off to a slow, but ideal start as they just about saw the new ball off. When the ball had stopped swinging, the pair decided to take it easy on the oppo and depart from their stands at the crease. From 16/0 off seven, NK had reached 23/2 after the eighth. Here stood the games' biggest partnership between Dazzler and Vossie - a crucial stand worth 55. Vossie chose the aerial route and picked his shots wisely, acting as the aggressor. Dazzler on the other hand, waited on the bad ball and played every ball on it's merit. Dáire then fell, caught behind. Vossie soon followed to a questionable LBW decision as did Sandy to leave the score on 112/5. This followed some good lower order support from Andy, Ger and Matt as they added 48 runs between the three of them. NK ended on 141 off their 40; which was a very competitive score after finding out just how slow the outfield really was.

Galway got off to a similar start as NK, in an attempt to see off the opening bowlers. After eight, only one wicket had fallen with the score on 23/1. With Dáire bowling some of his best stuff, he stayed on. At the other end, Sandy was introduced and immediately took effect with a double-wicket-maiden in his second over. Score - 31/3 off 10. Dazzler finished his spell soon after, ending with terrific figures and deserved more than just his one solitary wicket. With Dáire bowled out, Vossie brought himself on, and, he himself had two wickets within his first two overs. Trying to keep up with Sandy, Vossie then bagged himself a double-wicket-maiden in his fourth over. Galway were in real trouble now with the score on 56/7. Oppo batsman A. Kante and W. Rheenan set about taking the attack to the NK bowlers (Vossie in particular.) The pair added 51 in rapid time, as Rheenan smashed Vossie for three consecutive sixes, but Vossie had his man the ball after. With the score now on 105/8, NK were confident that they could finish the game off quickly and they did exactly that. A. Kante was run-out in the strangest of fashions and Andy wrapped up proceedings sending no.11's leg-stump cartwheeling - NK running out winners by 35 runs and bringing the Dick O'Neill home to North Kildare for the first time in 12 years!

Congratulations to the Galway lads. They showed great spirit when they were looking down the barrel and it made for a great game of cricket.

As for the NK lads, they were the better team on the day and it paid dividends.

As well as bringing the Dick O'Neill home, Dáire O'Neill also recieved the Midland Young Player of the Year award just to add to a great days' work. Dáire thoroughly deserved this award and showed why in his innings and with his spell in the seconds innings.

Thanks to both of Vossie's parents for organising the tea's.. if it weren't for the pair of them, the interval may have been a bit of a disaster.

And, to our 12th man, Gerry - another huge thanks to you for scoring. Your work for us never goes unappreciated!
