Longford v North Kildare Cricket Club Men's 2nd XI on Sun 15 Sep 2013 at 12:00
North Kildare Cricket Club Lost NK gave walkover
Match report
So - the seconds failed to travel to Longford for the last game of the season. Regardless of the result and the finish in the table, the seconds finished the season with some dignity and made a decent account of themselves in the final games of the season.
What started out to be a very difficult opening to the 2013 campaign, the seconds then gathered a few numbers and began to put together a team of eleven each week that looked to be competitive every game they played.
Personal highlights would have to be a close to perfect century from Safdar against Terenure and a 5-for from Vossie in that same game. A brilliant innings from Sandy against Castleknock brought home a famous victory at the Maws, winning on the final ball of the game with a wide. Sajjad's 4-for against Rush most definitely merits a mention, as does Ger's brilliance behind the stumps in the same game. Young Dáire O'Neill was awarded the 'Midland Young Player of the Year' in one of his best seasons for the club. As well as Dáire bringing home the award, Matthew O'Meara broke into the second team, as did Matthew Bond, Johnnie Flattery and Aaron Byrne who played their handful of games each. These five lads show that the future of North Kildare cricket is bright and one that we can all look forward to.
On a whole, the seconds were relegated, mainly because of the poor start to the season, barely being able to field a team. In each division from 1-10, if the seconds had played in any other league, they'd have been safe with the amount of games they had won, showing how good their opposition had been this year that NK were every bit as good as. Regardless of being relegated, the seconds managed to bring home some silverware in the Dick O'Neill cup for the first time in over a decade, beating Galway by 30 odd runs, defending a score of 130 at Clongowes in a famous win for North Kildare.
Off the pitch, I would personally like to thank Gerry Fennell in particular for scoring all season, as well as being like a 12th man for the seconds this year. We've all loved your support and we hope for the same support next year, from you and from all the others that attended the games in support of the seconds. A big thanks goes out to Naomi for her help with scoring on occasion, as well as playing for the seconds whenever she was needed. You made a fine addition and we will present you with a certain pair of trousers that Dollars is yet to give you.. Another thank you goes out to Vossie's parents and Henry in particular for preparing delicious tea's every single match without complaint. Last but not least, to John and the FÁS team for all of their work on the outfield and the tracks they've prepared; thank you for allowing us to play on some actual wickets this season. Hopefully the weather will allow you to do the same for us next year!
Lastly, I would like to wish Dollars the very best of luck in captaincy next season and thank everyone who has helped me in captaincy this year, a certain Gerard Horn in particular. In the two games Dollars skippered this year, he was very unfortunate to not finish with a 100% record. Good things await, Dalts!
Roll on 2014!
