Merrion 4 v North Kildare Cricket Club Men's 2nd XI on Sun 25 Aug 2013 at 13:00
North Kildare Cricket Club Lost by 5 wickets

Match report North Kildare seconds faced a visit to Merrion in a what was a must-win game.

Unfortunately, on arrival, unaware to North Kildare, there was an underage game taking place which delayed proceedings for a half an hour.

Because of the delay, the overs were reduced to 40-a-side. Vossie won the toss and chose to bat on the grass wicket. NK started poorly losing Dollars early on for a duck, but steadied the ship and brought the score on to 63/1 from 21 after a partnership worth 62, courtesy of Vossie and Barra. Things soon changed as Vossie and Richie were run-out one after another in almost identical fashion. This was then followed by the departure of Pargat and Sajjad soon after; both bowled. From 63/1, NK had somehow managed to slump to 96/6. Sandy and Amar added some resistance that left NK with a somewhat respectable total of 124 A/O - by no means a good score, but one that the seconds had something to work with.

After tea, North Kildare set about defending their total and were off to a good start - Sajjad bowling opener for a blob in the fifth. This was then followed by a stand of 60, with no. 3, Dhiman, really looking to take the attack to NK. He eventually holed out, but had taken a large chunk out of their target. No. 4, Sarhan and opener Kah then took the game away from North Kildare. The pair batted sensibly and took their time, although the NK attack were bowling exceptionally well. The reinvented off-spinner, Barra MacNiocaill got his man though and trapped Sarhan dead in front. Barra went on to end with figures of 8-2-12-2 - a truly terrific spell of bowling. Regardless of NK's efforts, they came up short by five wickets against a good Merrion side.

Nevertheless, NK made a great account of themselves as it took Merrion 37.5 overs to chase down their target. Nothing was handed to Merrion and they had to work extremely hard for their runs which is a good reflection on North Kildare's work in the field and with the ball.

As for next week, the seconds will host Rush in their first home-game for weeks. If standards in the field are carried from today into next week, North Kildare will back their chances of gaining their third league-win of the season.

Thanks once again to Mr. Fennel for his efforts' with the book. It is much appreciated as always.
