North Kildare Cricket Club Men's 2nd XI v Castleknock 1 on Sun 08 Sep 2013 at 12:00
North Kildare Cricket Club Won by 2 wickets
Match report
The seconds awaited a visit from Castleknock, in a fixture that was back-and-forth, but was finally settled as a home fixture.
What was supposed to be a 12 o'clock start, turned into a 12.45 start as Castleknock decided to rock up 30 minutes late. When the toss was finally deliberated, oppo skipper had chosen to bat - Vossie not too displeased with the decision as he would have chosen to field first anyway.
Ex-NK player Salmon started in usual fashion and took the attack to Sajjad and Sandy who opened up. Vossie brought himself into the attack and immediately took effect, removing the danger man, Salmon for 28. Salmon's opening partner then departed at the hands of Vossie, caught & bowled. MacNiocaill was bowling in usual fashion at the other end, but when Vossie and Baz were bowled out, NK still managed to take wickets at regular intervals, largely due to a great spell of bowling from Pargat. However, the seconds allowed no.3, Harrish to SOMEHOW accumulate a total of 46 runs. In his 46, he had edged behind to Ger, but wasn't given, he was dropped twice and we somehow managed to not run him out when he was stood clueless in the middle of the track. In truth, the fielding display was extremely poor, especially considering the efforts produced the week before to bowl Rush out for less than 100. Neverthless, Castelknock undeservedly finished on 169 from their 40 overs, which wasn't much more than par.
North Kildare were fully confident that they could chase down their target, but knew that batting their full 40 overs was crucial.
Barra and Ger opened up and the pair got NK off to a cautious, but steady start, leaving the score on 37/1 from 14. Dollars came and went and Barra followed soon after. This left Vossie and Sandy at the crease and the pair put NK in a decent position to chase down their target. From 47/3 from 18, the pair brought the total to 97/4 from 28 with a stand of 50. Vossie departed playing a rather poor shot, falling in the 20's for the third time in succession. Behzad replaced Vossie at the crease after a timely promotion. Sandy and Behzad then battered Castleknock into submission. The pair added 52 in rapid time - NK now needing 25 runs from 5 overs. With the pair at the crease, victory was imminent. Unfortunately, both of the lads fell, one after another, Behzad for 31 from 21 balls and Sandy falling just six short of a well-deserved 50. When the pair departed, NK somehow offered Castleknock a way back into the game. From being completely in the driving seat at 145/4 off 38, NK were 159/7, needing 11 with two wickets in hand. With Sajjad and Pargat at the crease, the home fans were still more than confident that the pair could knock off the runs required. Sajjad then justified that faith, by demolishing Salmon back over his head, for a MASSIVE 6. At this point, NK felt that they were home and dry.. this was, until Pargat was run out, NK still needing 1 to win with just 1 wicket remaining. Young Aaron Byrne came in at no.10 and faced four dots - NK needing 1 from 1. At this stage, the heartbeats had increased dramatically and there were no nails left in sight. Here followed one of the strangest scenes - a wide being called on the final ball, Sajjad and Aaron shaking hands in the middle of the track, but NK had won as the wide was signaled, meaning that the game had ended at that point, cancelling out the run-out.
So - NK win their second game on the bounce for the first time this season, after a terrific game of cricket that came down to the final ball of the innings. Batting the full 40 played the most significant role in the win, as well as the partnership between Sandy and Behzad that took the game away from Castleknock.
Up next - Longford.. away in the final game of the season. If the lads can win their third straight game against Longford, there may be a glimmer of hope that the seconds can stay up. However, time will tell.
Thanks to Henry and to Vossie's folks for handling tea and drinks and to Naomi for scoring on such short notice.
