North Kildare Cricket Club Men's 2nd XI v Terenure 2 on Sat 06 Jul 2013 at 13:30
North Kildare Cricket Club Won by 39 runs
Match report
On a beautiful day at the Maws, North Kildare set about beating the youth of Terenure and getting their season back on track.
Vorster won the toss and elected to bat on the freshly cut track. Having 10 for the first innings, winning the toss was crucial and paid dividends. Unfortunately, North Kildare were in a very similar position in the Ballyhaunis game, as they saw themselves 10/2 early doors. In need of rebuilding, Dalton and Vorster set about steadying the ship; and did so, in a partnership worth 48. Dollars fell on 14, chasing a wide one.. where have we heard that before? O'Neill fell soon after, which brought Hussain to the crease. The partnership between Vorster and Safdar definitely left the innings poised in North Kildare's favour. The pair added a quickfire 60, with Vorster taking the attack to the Terenure attack, while Safdar quietly went about his business, patiently waiting for his time to unleash his attack to the Terenure boys. The partnership was short lived though, as Vorster thought he was in a 20 meter sprint with Usian Bolt. Of course, Vorster was gone run out. This was a big loss as Vorster was at ease at the crease, falling right before drinks. Nevertheless, Safdar and new man in Ger, knuckled down and built the most important partnership of the game. Although Safdar scored the vast majority of the runs in the partnership, Ger did his job to perfection, at a stage that one wicket may have swung the game in Terenure's favour. Ger's test innings, kept the Terenure attack out and got Safdar on strike when possible. The two lads went on to add another partnership worth more than 50. At this stage, Safdar was on top of his game, dispatching good and bad balls. When Ger fell, Safdar heightened his onslaught. Safdar reached his 100 off as many balls. Safdar demonstrated EXACTLY how to build an innings and go on to make a big score.. playing every ball on it's merit. North Kildare ended on 220 A/O, a very decent score on a wicket that looked to do a bit.
After a scrumptious tea, NK set about finishing off their good work from the first innings. Surprisingly, Terenure came out firing, with opener Cyncil smashing 28 off 14 balls, with some clean hitting. However, he didn't look as if he was set for an innings of any real stature. Vorster cleaned him up with a slower one, in the first of his five. Bowling medium pace off three different run-ups, Vorster appeared to baffle the Terenure lineup, leaving them at 107/5 off 17. At this stage, North Kildare were in pole position to get the win. Terenure had other ideas. To be fair, they never gave up the ghost, with their lineup stretching the whole way to eleven. The combined spin of Safdar and Sandy finished off the job. Safdar bowled straigh through with tidy figures, although he didn't take a wicket. Sandy on the other hand, bowled his most impressive spell to date for North Kildare, taking 3 wickets off his nine overs, at an economy rate of just over two. Melissa grabbed her first scalp for North Kildare men and Sajjad wrapped up proceedings, bowling M. Fogarty who showed a great deal of resilience. A great day for North Kildare seconds that had been coming.
Congrats to Safdar on his first century for the club. Well deserved and a match winning knock.
Dollars most definitely deserves a mention after his efforts in the field. Dollars was exceptional in the field, setting the standard. Big Welcome to Naomi, filling in today doing an excellent job for us.
Thanks again to Gerry for scoring. I'm sure plenty of other people may have came up with some sort of excuse to get out of scoring in weather like today's!
Next up - Rush away. Let's make it two out of two!
