Castleknock 1 v North Kildare Cricket Club Men's 2nd XI on Sat 01 Jun 2013 at 13:00
North Kildare Cricket Club Lost by 10 runs

Match report NK men's seconds returned from their second defeat of the season in Porterstown Park disappointed at letting a first-round cup victory slip away from them.

Once again Salman anchored the Castleknock innings with great skill and maturity, batting for most of the innings before being bowled by Vorster for 77. The Kildaremen had ample opportunity to cut this short with the classy Castleknock opener dropped on three occasions. Wickets fell at the other end until Salman was joined by Indrajit who scored 64 before being bowled by Gulab Singh late in the innings.

Kildare's response started brightly as they raced to 29 runs from the first three overs before Rahman pulled a beamer to backward square leg. He was followed eight runs later by Safdar. At the other end, however, Imran Mohammed was in wonderful touch in his debut game. Having taken three wickets in the first innings he was powering Kildare forward. The next partnership, between himself and skipper Vorster added 74 runs before Vossy became the first of five LBW victims. Imran, having scored 86, was the next wicket to fall again LBW with the score on 138. At the far end Cameron Futter had taken over the mantle of leading the chase, adding an impressive 15 before being bowled with the score on 151. When Happy Singh's innings ended three runs later Kildare looked to be in trouble before Sandy Chahal steadied the ship. His impressive stroke play seemed to be guiding Kildare towards victory, but there were more twists to follow and with 171 on the board Sandy was adjudged out leg before.

Earlier in the season the seconds might have rolled over at this point but Sajjad Maqsood was batting patiently for 10 before being run out. Gulab Singh and his new partner Ger Horn remained confident of bringing the team home, but Gulab fell with the score on 186, leaving the visitors needing, as they thought at the time, 21 for victory. It was not to be, with Pargat Singh falling LBW at the danger end with ten runs still separating the teams.

Our best wishes to Gerry Fennel who was due to be our official scorer for the match but was taken ill on Saturday morning. The discrepancies in both innings of the score-card show how hard it is for players to do that job and play at the same time.
