North Kildare Cricket Club Men's 1st XI v Dundrum 1 on Sun 04 Aug 2013 at 13:00
North Kildare Cricket Club Lost By 3 Wickets (3/25pts)

Match report On Sunday the 1sts looked to extend their unbeaten league run in to double figures against visitors Dundrum, a side NK had thrashed by 9 wkts back in April in the season opener. Neavyn won the toss and elected to bat first. Somewhere around 250 was deemed to be par but it quickly became clear, with the pitch offering plenty to the bowlers and with the outfield being significantly slower than it had been it recent times, that 200 could actually be a very strong total to post. Kildare had a poor start when Manny Singh, opening in the absence of Imran Muhammad, missed a straight one and was out lbw. Vorster joined Neavyn and the pair put together a useful looking stand of 58 with some good running between the wickets the most positive aspect of the partnership. Vorster looked to play his shots as best he could on the tricky wicket whilst Neavyn was trying to grind out a start before eventually he lost patience and missed a straight one he tried to pull to be bowled. What the 1sts needed for the 3rd or 4th wicket was another partnership of this type to get them to 120-130 with wickets in hand to then allow them to be more aggressive in the final 15 overs or so to get them to 200 or even beyond, but NK didn't enjoy another useful stand until Gulab Singh and MacNiocaill put on 50 runs for the final wicket. After Neavyn fell, Vorster, Sethi and Hussain all followed quickly to leave the 1sts in a spot of bother on 78-5. Even the in form Walshe couldn't dig NK out of this hole. He and Dalton consolidated somewhat with a stand worth 32 but Walshe was soon to depart when, like Neavyn, he missed a straight one he attempted to pull. Dalton, Satchwell and Wasif Ali all fell in quick succession to leave the 1sts in dire straits on 123-9. Thankfully MacNiocaill was on hand to once again play a part in a very valuable 10th wicket stand this time alongside Gulab Singh. MacNiocaill did the rotating whilst Gulab executed the biffing, he hit two maximums including one towards the canal via deep mid wicket. The pair added 50 in 11 overs before Singh fell with just 3 balls remaining in the innings. Thanks to this stand the 1sts had salvaged something from the earlier wreckage and were very much in with a chance with 173 runs now to defend. NK were disappointed with the total but knew that it was a score they were more than capable of defending. Dundrum would have to bat well.

Kildare didn't have to wait long for the breakthrough as Wasif Ali hit the timber in his opening over to remove the oppo no.1. A stand worth 26 followed before Satchwell bagged himself a deserved wicket when he found the edge of the other opener and Walshe made no mistake at first slip. In the next over Wasif struck again when he once more hit the timber with one that nipped back in to confound the oppo no.4. Three early wickets looked good for the 1sts but they weren't having it all their own way as Dundrum had managed to score briskly in this period also. 41-3 off 8. There followed a match winning partnership for the oppo between their no.3 Alex Mathew and no.5 Sanju George worth 116. The 1sts threw almost everything they had at the pair but just couldn't get the breakthrough. First off, after Satchwell and Wasif finished opening spells of 6 overs each, Shiv Sethi and Gulab Singh had an extended go at trying to get the breakthrough but neither could manage it. Both Sethi and Singh kept things fairly tight and both beat the outside edge several times but neither could get the wicket the 1sts badly needed. By drinks Dundrum had moved in to a commanding position. 100-3 off 25. Manny Singh was introduced in to the attack after drinks but like all before him he also couldn't find a wicket. Vorster had a go too, also to no avail. The game now looked to be slipping away completely from NK. Finally Kildare found the answer in Safdar Hussain. Saffy came on with the oppo just 19 runs shy of victory. He struck in his opening over when, bowling his offies from around the wicket, he found the edge of the no.5 Sanju George and Walshe took a superb reflex catch at slip. The over soon got even better for Kildare when the no.3 Mathew was run out. Oddly the 1sts couldn't get one of these lads out in 28 overs but managed to remove both of them in the space of one over. Did Kildare now have a sniff of victory? Well apparently yes as Satchwell, brought back in to the attack, promptly removed the no.6 Raj who attempted some kind of odd looking hoik to leg and was bowled. Saffy then trapped the no.7 lbw in the next over and all of a sudden, out of nowhere really, it was game on! 162-7 off 39. With a clearly very nervous looking no.9 arriving at the crease it was obvious NK genuinely felt an incredible comeback was on the cards but every chance had to be taken and unfortunately, with 11 runs still needed, the nervy no.9 offered one to square-leg only for it to be dropped. No more chances were given and in the end the oppo scampered to the win. In summary the 1sts didn't quite have a enough runs on the board and despite the late comeback suffered their first league defeat of the season and with it the chance of what could of been a remarkable clean sweep in the league. The 1sts move on with the task of clinching the Division 4 title still firmly in their sights.
