North Kildare Cricket Club Men's 1st XI v Mullingar 1 on Sun 21 Jul 2013 at 13:00
North Kildare Cricket Club Won By 95 Runs (24/25pts)

Match report On another beautiful day at the Maws, North Kildare firsts looked to strengthen their position at the top of division 4 by winning their eighth game on the bounce.

Proceedings were off to a promising start when skipper, Neavyn won the all important toss and opted to bat. With a well-prepared track and a fast outfield, winning the toss was essential and provided rewards. Regardless of what was to come, North Kildare started in the worst possible manner, losing Immy Ul-Haq for a duck, after facing just two balls. Next in; Manny Singh. With the score on 1/1, a partnership was needed and the boys duly obliged. Manny and Rob added a further 107 together in the matches' biggest partnership. Apart from a reprieve for Manny, the two boys barely offered a chance in their innings. Neavyn was in fine touch, dominating the fairly average Mullingar attack, hitting boundaries with ease (nine in total.) Manny took his time initially, but once he found his feet at the crease, he too looked at ease and displayed a few glorius (Manny like) strokes in his innings. Unfortunately, when Neavyn fell (caught behind), so did Manny after losing concentration when facing ultra slow bowler D. Ryan. Vossie departed soon after, looking to go big early, probably because he had been playing too much 'Stick Cricket' on his phone the night before. So.. from 107/1, NK had slumped to 132/4. Thankfully, the two veterans got together and restored NK's stern position. Walshe, now known as 'The Dooog' and Mark added a quickfire 66 together and put NK in the position to go on and make a big score. Mark fell for 26 off 26 balls and in came Dollars. 'The Dooog' and Dollars went on to add a vital 87 runs together. This partnership really took the game away from Mullingar. Walshe (in top-nick at this stage) dispatched anything loose, full or of any width. Dollars backed Walshe up, by putting the bad ball away and running well between the wickets to provide Walshe with the strike whenever possible. When Dollars was caught by "unknown" Wazzie strode out with his railway sleeper. Not exactly a sight a bowler wants to see when he has already gone for a few. Wazzie came and went, but before he came and went, he obliterated two fullish deliveries half way to Kilcock. Unfortunately, it was short-lived, but Wazzie's little cameo had sent NK past 300. Satch and Sandy added another few and NK ended on 314-8. An excellent total, on a pitch that looked to be a bit "sticky". Job one, well done - thanks to an excellent knock from in-form Walshe (The Dooog), which was well backed down the order and the third wicket partnership from Rob and Manny. Now to back up the batting efforts up in the field.

NK started their second innings brightly, with Satch and Wazzie producing the highest standard of opening spells. Apart from the odd wide, Satch and Waz bowled perfect opening spells, baffling the top order in the 14 overs they bowled and their figures in no way represent their performance. Astonishingly, only one wicket fell in their opening spells, but the pair had reduced Mullingar to 45/1 off 14 leaving Mullingar way behind the RRR. Regardless of the amount of wickets down, the pair took the game away from Mullingar. Gulab and Manny were brought on and the pair tightened the squeeze further, but only grabbing a wicket each (again, their figures don't reflect their bowling performances.) At the halfway mark, Mullingar were a mere 230 odd runs short. Knowing that the game had played it's course, North Kildare sat back in the field and perhaps; let the game go on for longer than it should have. With this said, there were moments of brilliance in the field. Two great catches from Immy Ul-Haq, a direct hit/run out from Markie and some quality all-round fielding from Satch were the highlights, but in the end, Mullingar frustrated the NK firsts, with a tenth wicket partnership of 39, nicking a point that wasn't really deserved. Sandy wrapped up proceedings, snatching himself three wickets, including an incredible C&B, removing the only resistance the Mullingar lineup provided (A. Haider.) Nonetheless, a win of 95 runs (while not being at our best standard in the field) shows the strength in depth that the first team have at their disposal this year. In the end, NK won with ease and also topped up their tans in the ever-lasting heatwave.

Thanks to Gerry for scoring and for anyone that helped with tea and drinks. All help is always much appreciated.

Next up - Phoenix at home. Will the firsts make it nine out of nine? Time will tell, but the firsts will definitely be expecting a much closer game.. one that will require us to be on top of our game in all aspects of the game.
