Railway Union 2 v North Kildare Cricket Club Men's 1st XI on Sun 23 Jun 2013 at 13:00
North Kildare Cricket Club Won By 5 Wickets (23/25pts)
Match report
On a gloriously rubbish June day the 1sts travelled to Railway Union and demonstrated a hardy resistance to cold by securing another league victory. Neavyn won the toss and put the home side in to bat on a green top. Both Satchwell and Muhammad couldn't repeat their heroics against CS the previous week however as the pair struggled to find good areas consistently in the windy conditions, although Satchwell still managed to deliver the odd beauty. Gulab Singh replaced Muhammad early doors and bowled a terrific spell of ten straight overs in which he removed the no.2, no.3 and no.4 and in between those dismissals Wasif Ali produced the ball of the day when he hit the top of off to clean bowl the oppo no.1 and top scorer. With these four wickets NK had reduced the oppo to 99-4 and had regained some control after the disappointing start. Utilising the conditions beautifully, Manny Singh proceeded to torment the RU middle and lower order on his way to the superb figures of 9-1-25-4. Manny removed the no.5, no.6, no.8 and no.9 and in between these four dismissals Wasif Ali popped up again when he dismissed the no.7 with a sharp catch off his own bowling. No better man is there than Wasif for snatching a chance off his own bowling. It was left then to Satchwell to finish things off when he wasted no time removing the no.10 clean bowled. There was a definite end of season contender for best catch of the year when Imran Muhammad displayed excellent anticipation and skill by taking a very sharp chance at gully off the bowling of Manny Singh. The 1sts bowled RU out for a below par looking score of 175 with Ernie Extras top scoring with an incredible 45. There were 26 wides in all but the reality is that the umpires were being overly strict in their interpretation of an off side wide with some harsh calls being made. However their interpretation remained consistent throughout the match (Railway would go on to bowl 24 wides themselves). Job one done then. This was a solid performance from Kildare in the field in testing conditions. Could the 1sts produce a solid performance with the bat and chase down the 176 required?
Neavyn and Muhammad put on 33 before Muhammad fell, caught in the deep, there followed a stand worth 47 between Neavyn and Manny Singh that got Kildare to 81-1 off 20 overs. A very strong position to go on and win the game with ease you might think. However a mini collapse was about to take place. Neavyn fell when he miscued to cover and this was followed by the run outs of both Manny Singh and Ul-Haq in quick succession. As a result the 1sts had conspired to allow the oppo a way back in to the game with the score now on 84-4. Vorster and Walshe were able to steady the ship with a stand worth 36 before Walshe fell leg before attempting to sweep. Vorster was then joined by fellow leftie Dalton and the pair put together an unbeaten stand worth 55 to take Kildare to victory with plenty of overs to spare. In the end the 1sts strolled to victory as Vorster continued his excellent form with the bat, hitting 7 boundaries on his way to an unbeaten 48.
