North Kildare Cricket Club Men's 1st XI v Civil Service 1 on Sat 15 Jun 2013 at 13:00
North Kildare Cricket Club Won By 93 Runs (24/25pts)

Match report It's not very often you face the same opposition twice in one weekend in a league and cup double, yet this is exactly what faced the 1sts as they took on the challenge of Civil Service, at home in the league on Saturday and then away in a Senior 2 Cup 1/4 final on the Sunday. On Saturday the question was; could NK continue their winning ways in the league to make it 5 wins from 5 and become the only unbeaten side in Division 4?

Neavyn won the toss and opted to have a bat on the mat. A bit of a wind was blowing but other than that conditions looked to be in favour of a big Kildare total. Unfortunately the 1sts produced a pretty tame performance with the bat and were bundled out for a pathetic total of 146 despite an opening stand worth 71. Imran Muhammed was the only Kildare batsman to make a score as he helped the 1sts get off to that good start with an aggressive knock, making his 49 off approx as many balls. Kildare retired to the changing rooms less than impressed with their efforts and emerged soon after, possibly even less than less than impressed, but determined to make amends. As the first innings had come to a premature conclusion the second innings was to begin before tea was taken. Kildare knew they needed some early wickets in this short session to put some pressure on the opposition.

To say NK came out fighting might be an understatement. Satchwell produced a yorker in the opening over that was too good for the oppo no.1. Not to be outdone, Imran Muhammed promptly removed the other opener with the first ball of the second over, bowled. Game on. Fourth over and another wicket for Muhammed, the oppo no.4, again, bowled. Next over and Satchwell strikes again, the oppo no.3 sent packing, bowled yet again. At tea NK had reduced the visitors to 26 for 4 and had them properly rattled. It wasn't about to get any better for the opposition after tea. Muhammed didn't waste any time getting the ball rolling again after the break, dismissing the oppo no.5 lbw with the very first ball. Satchwell decided it was high time he got himself an lbw too and so he did in the next over. That wasn't enough for Satchwell in that over though as he promptly removed the no.6 caught by Dalton at point a few balls later. Muhammed decided it was high time he got two wickets in an over too and so he did in the next over, completing a five wicket haul in the process. In the next over Satchwell was unlucky to not achieve his own five wicket haul with a catch going down at slip. It was left then to Muhammed to finish off the oppo in the next over when he had the no.11 caught at mid-on by Ul-Haq. 11.5 overs is all it took for Satchwell and Muhammed to bowl out the opposition! It was a magnificent performance from the 1sts opening bowlers. One to remember.

On Sunday the 1sts made the return trip to the Park to face CS in the Senior 2 Cup. Neavyn won the toss once again and put the opposition in to bat on a green top. On this occasion the wounded animal that was CS provided considerably more resistance with the bat. The opposition were going decently at one stage on 68-2 before Kildare wrestled back control and reduced the home side to 101-6 and then 122-7. However some late biffing from the oppo no.6 got CS to 160 before Vorster brought an end to the first innings when he bowled the no.6 in the 39th over. Although CS scored 107 more runs than the previous day this was a good performance from NK. After all, it’s not every day you bowl a side out for 53. There were five catches taken by five different fielders including a sharp one at short cover by debutant Halal Asad. Satchwell continued his great form from the previous day with two more top order wickets and three altogether. Wasif Ali took his first wicket of the season and Manjeet Singh and Gulab Singh both reached ten wickets for the season with two and three scalps respectively. Debutant Halal Asad took the new ball and for a bowler who was short of match practice, or any practice for that matter, did an admirable job. All in all it was an all round good performance from Kildare and they were confident at half-time that they could chase down their target but knew it would require some patient and disciplined batting to get them home. They also knew that some big-hitting probably wouldn’t do any harm at some point either....................................

The 1sts enjoyed three useful partnerships that got them to 96-2 and in a decent position to go on and win the game. However Walshe, Dalton and Satchwell all fell in quick succession to leave the 1sts in a spot of bother on 106-5 with overs beginning to slip away. By the end of the 32nd over Kildare were 107-5 and needed another 54 runs off 48 balls, a RRR of almost 7. A tough ask on a tricky wicket in fading light you might think. Wasif Ali got a timely promotion up the order and was set the task of hitting some quick boundaries to bring down the required run rate. Wasif however hit more than just a few quick boundaries. He blasted the CS bowlers to all parts in a rapid 24 ball 40* and NK as a result strolled to victory with 5 wickets and 2 overs to spare! I suspect the poor opposition didn’t see that coming. One minute they were looking like big favorites but a few swipes of Wasif’s bat later and it’s game over! The successful chase of course needed more than just a cracking cameo from Wasif. Manny Singh was looking in good touch as he made a crucial 35 before he was unluckily bowled by a ball that barely bounced. Top batting honours though went to Vorster who continued his rich vein of form with another unbeaten half century. Vossy demonstrated the patience and discipline required on this surface to make a score and eventually got the bit of help he needed from Wasif as the pair put on 58 runs to take the 1sts into the semi-finals of the Senior 2 Cup. Another double-header weekend is on the horizon.
