Phoenix 2 v North Kildare Cricket Club Men's 1st XI on Sun 02 Jun 2013 at 13:00
North Kildare Cricket Club Won By 39 Runs (21/25pts)
Match report
Another trip to the Park and another win for NK. This time the 1sts recorded their third consecutive away victory over Phoenix 2nds and their second victory over them this season having won the Tillain Cup fixture in NK two weeks previous. The day started badly for NK however when Barra MacNiocaill pulled up with a back injury during the warm-up. Barra was just about able to go in and bat 11 later on but was in no condition to field. Thankfully Ger Horn was on hand to sub field for Barra in the 2nd innings. Ger was not a bad man to be able to bring in to sub field and the 1sts were lucky he was able to do it. Before any of that took place however Neavyn had won the toss and Kildare had a job to do with the bat. A job they didn’t do very well.
Before a ball was bowled it had looked like a great toss to win. However the pitch didn’t play quite as well as expected, with some uneven bounce and pace becoming apparent early on and there was enough turn to keep the spinners interested early doors too. From the top order only Neavyn produced a score of much note. He made 40 before being clean bowled by the oppo off-spinner. Manny Singh had looked in good touch and had made a start before he was run out courtesy of a direct hit from the square-leg fielder. The 1sts were in decent shape after 20 overs with the score on 79-2 but then Neavyn fell and a collapse took place. After 26 overs 79-2 had become a dire 101-7. An excellent counter attacking knock from Topping and some solid defensive batting from Gulab Singh in support resulted in a stand of 50 vital runs for Kildare. Topping was last to fall with the score on 166. With 225 deemed to be around par in the conditions the 1sts were clearly way shy of par but thanks to that 50 run stand they knew that, with their bowling attack, on this deck, they had more than a fighting chance.
The 1sts started the 2nd innings poorly. Some of the slightly looser deliveries were punished by Phoenix opener Keane as they got off to a quick start. Keane went on to make 43 before he was bowled by a straight one from Manny Singh which fooled the batsman completely. Manny’s spin had replaced Satchwell early on and Manny would go on to bowl a superb spell of ten straight overs in which he removed the oppo top three. It was this spell from Manny that got the NK engine started. It was then Gulab Singh’s turn to rip out the middle order with some relentless line and length bowling. Gulab constantly asked questions of the batsmen and got his first wicket by trapping the no.5 lbw and then followed that up with another lbw to send the no.6 back. The important wicket of the Phoenix captain followed soon after as his inside edge just about carried through to keeper Neavyn and Gulab then produced a yorker to make sure the no.8’s stay was a short one. The 1sts were very much on top at this stage but the oppo still had some fight in them and a stand between the no.7 and no.9 got them believing again as Phoenix edged closer to their target. Topping was introduced into the attack and, not for the first time this season, he got a wicket in his first over by removing the no.7 lbw and the Kildare engine was up and running once more. Satchwell soon knocked over the middle peg of the no.10 with an excellent yorker and bagged himself a deserved wicket and Topping then got the celebrations started when he hung on to a leading edge from the no.9 for a caught & bowled. So ultimately NK ran out winners by the relatively comfortable margin of 39 runs and made it 3 wins out of 3 in the league this year.
