Dundrum 1 v North Kildare Cricket Club Men's 1st XI on Sun 28 Apr 2013 at 12:30
North Kildare Cricket Club Won By 9 Wkts (25/25pts)

Match report The 1sts got their season off to a flying start courtesy of a thumping 9 wicket victory away to Dundrum. The oppo won the toss and elected to bat first. NK took to the field with just ten players initially as Ian Walshe's arrival was delayed by an hour and a half. What followed was a terrific performance by all the bowlers with excellent support coming throughout from the fielders. Everyone was delighted to see debutant Mark Topping bag his first wicket for the club in his first over when he got the oppo opener Abhi to edge one straight to Sethi at slip. Great start. Satchwell opened with 6 excellent and at times fiery but ultimately luckless overs from the other end. Sethi replaced Topping and like Topping bagged himself a wicket in his first over. Shiv went on to bowl 7 straight overs, taking 2 more wickets and keeping the oppo batsmen largely subdued. O'Neill replaced Satchwell and it wasn't long before he showed his quality by cutting the dangerous Raj in two with a beauty of a delivery for a very important wicket. Ehsan Dar replaced O'Neill and once he found his rhythm became too tricky to handle for the oppo batsmen. Dar helped himself to 4 wickets one of which was oppo top scorer Mathew (43). Before Ehsan finished off the Dundrum innings with the 10th wicket, Manny Singh, who had replaced Sethi, took his first wicket of the season too. So five of the six bowlers used were in the wickets with only Satchwell unluckily missing out despite continually beating the outside edge during his spell. This was a very good effort from NK to bowl out Dundrum for a mere 127 at their home ground on a decent batting surface. The 1sts determination and workrate was evident throughout and Dundrum eventually capitulated under the weight of this.

So could NK coast to victory with just 128 runs to get. Well, yes. Satchwell fell in the 7th over when he edged Nair to slip and the oppo had given themselves a burst of excitement but there was to be no more joy for Dundrum. Neavyn (clearly in no rush) and Singh completed an unbeaten stand of 115 to take the 1sts home with many overs to spare. It wasn't thrilling stuff but it was clinical with Neavyn providing some entertainment late on when he, thankfully, smacked a few maximums to hasten the inevitable. With the loss of only 1 wicket the 1sts secured the maximum 25 pts on offer.

So an excellent result for NK in what was a potentially tricky season opener. Dundrum are not as bad as this result may suggest and they should be good enough to take some points off visitors to Wesley College this season.
