North Kildare Cricket Club Won By 34 Runs

Match report Another game and another win for the 1sts as they continue their excellent start to the season and progress to the 1/4 finals of the Senior 2 Cup. Neavyn won the toss and chose to bat first. 200 was deemed to be par in this 40 over per innings encounter so NK judged this to be their minimum target but hoped to get a few more. And a few more than 200 they did get in the bat friendly conditions. With the grass wicket playing well, quick outfield and shortish straight boundaries it was Ul-Haq and Vorster who took advantage with knocks of 73 and 54 respectively. Ul-Haq compiled his 73 off a mere 52 balls, hitting several typically hefty blows with left arm spinner Boyne taking the bulk of the damage. Ul-Haq couldn't go on to make the big ton however but his knock put Malahide on the back foot and set up the opportunity for a large total. After Ul-Haq was dismissed Dalton and Vorster put together a steady stand of 42 before Dalton was bowled by a good one from seamer Kirwan, who was hands down Malahide's best bowler. There followed a superb match winning partnership between Vorster and Topping of 72 that took the Kildare men well past the 200 mark with overs to spare and denied the oppo any aspirations they may have had of getting a grip back on the game. Vorster displayed some tremendous timing and technique in hitting 9x4s in his 54 of just 45 balls (his first 50 for the 1sts) and Topping didn't exactly hang around either as he demonstrated a healthy dose of ambition and a touch of flair making his 33 off a mere 25 balls, the highlight of the knock perhaps a classy cut shot that raced away to the deep point boundary. In the end NK were bowled out with just one ball remaining as they looked to eke out as many runs as they could muster in the closing stages of their innings, with Vorster unluckily missing out on a not not when he was run out in the final over. 263 in 39.5 overs was an impressive effort from Kildare, especially so considering 4 of the top 5 didn't trouble the scorers much.

The 1sts defense got off to an ideal start with a couple of early wickets falling, one each for Satchwell and Topping. Satchwell fizzed it through at times in another quality fiery opening spell and got oppo opener Reynolds to nick one off to keeper Neavyn. Topping then had the oppo no.3 caught brilliantly by a diving Vorster at gully. There followed a superb stand between oppo opener Boyne and no.4 Kirwan worth no less than 165. Both batted and ran extremely well and offered up very few chances to Kildare to dismiss them. Only Sethi managed to keep the pair in check with his 8 overs going for just 29 runs. Ultimately the required rate proved just too much for Malahide to keep up with and when finally the breakthrough came, thanks to a Satchwell yorker that sent Kirwan back from whence he came, they capitulated in a hurry. Boyne himself followed soon after just shy of his ton when he was run out as the oppo started to attempt to run almost anything with dot balls not much use to them. Two more run outs followed and Gulab Singh bagged himself a pair of deserved wickets with Dalton taking the catches at point and a high one in the cover region. Vorster produced some good death bowling and it was he who brought an end to proceedings when he bowled a couple of hapless oppo tailenders.

Rumour has it this is the first time NK have won a Senior 2 Cup match in over 20 years. This as of now is TBC. It certainly is however the first Senior 2 Cup win for NK since they returned to the competition in 2009. Nice.
