Leinster 4 v North Kildare Cricket Club Men's 2nd XI on Mon 06 Aug 2012 at 1.30
North Kildare Cricket Club Lost by 3 wickets

Match report With the regular Skipper fretting on his sun lounger in St. Tropez while the two’s travelled to Leinster on bank holiday Monday. The Stand in skipper was thinking it was a good toss to lose when he coin came down in his favour. With clouds overhead he opted to bat on a juicy green top. Leinster where top of the table having scored over 200+ in all their games batting first it was a tough call.

It became even tougher as the ball hoped around corners and found Satchwell, & Voster back in the hutch for 1 between them. Paddy & Paul stumbled along to 43, before Paul found the only other fielder that can take a stunning one handed catch at mid off. As Paddy departed for a crafted 23, ground hog day loomed again for the 2’nds batting. Then in rode Steve McQueen on his motor bike to the tune of the great escape. (late as usual) in the shape of Zak Khan.

Zhak along with new player Sajjad Maqsood (18) put together a partnership of 52 and just as Zhak (84) was eyeing up a well deserved 100 he fell unselfishly short trying to take the attack to Leinster’s opening bowlers with 4 overs to spare. A great knock Zak great to see you back in the runs and the ball disappear to the surrounding gardens of Dublin.

As the tail fell away in an all too familiar fashion, in a bid for quick runs NK ended at 177 A.O. off 44. A target that seemed a little modest and possibly 20 runs short on this drying track.

Leinster started very slowly and found it tough going against attack of Tom & Paddy , the play and miss, being the order of the day. Then on came NK’s own Bertie basset, with his mix of seam, spin an dolly mixtures to claim the first two Leinster scalps – game on. The continued tight attack lead to, two run outs including one bizarrely as the non striker just started to run when the ball had gone straight to the keeper? As the rate ramped up to 6-7+ the remaining Leinster opener Nazir & their skipper ovenden, took control with some well, an not so well, judged 1’s & 4’s. The small fact that Nazir was close to being run out numerous times, dropped twice and he turned and headed for the pavilion to the sound of a thick glove down the leg side only the Umpires call of “not out” could be heard above the deafening silence of disbelief from the NK fielders. Poor Daire O’Neils luck was too be found on another day!

So with a few shots in anger from the Leinster middle order they rode their luck and the usual decision or three and scurried over the line with an over to spare., NK paid the price again of not batting out the full 45 overs where maybe with some improved support bowling we may have seen a different result.
Close but no cigar!
