Bagenalstown v North Kildare Cricket Club Men's 2nd XI on Sun 22 Jul 2012 at 1.30
North Kildare Cricket Club Lost 23 runs

Match report The Mens 2nds travelled to our second home ground (joking) - Bagenalstown last Sunday.

Winning the toss again, this time Gordie chose to insert our opponents on what looked a harder - but every bit as green - version of last weekend's wicket.

Guy Donald (7-0-22-0) bowled a very economical opening spell, in tandem with Paul McGreivy (9-0-13-2). Extracting extravagant seam movement from the green top, the ball was hard to get away in the initial stages, whilst posing questions of the Bagenalstown batsmen.

Arun Nair (9-2-26-3) came on first change and bowled what was easily his best spell of bowling for North Kildare. Bowling slightly within himself, he still moved the ball around with a fair bit of pace. He really produced a beautiful spell of bowling, with barely a bad ball to be seen in his 9 overs. At the other end, Tariq Mushtaq (9-0-35-0) was also enjoying the bowler friendly environment and he will bowl worse spells this year and pick up wickets.

However, though our first four bowlers 34 overs went for 96 runs, unfortunately, the other 11 overs conceded 72. The lack of a penetration at the other end would prove crucial later on, as Bagenalstown totalled 175 for 7 off their allocation.

North Kildare openers Gareth Moxom (28) & Paul McGreivy (10) got things off to a reasonable start before Paul was dismissed by a stunning one-handed at extra cover. The ball had four written all over it before the Bagenalstown fielder (and their most valuable player, Julian - who, over the years hasn't been able to buy a run against North Kildare - but has been a serious thorn in our side this year) stuck a hand out and snaffled it. 36 for 1 off 11 overs.

Two consecutive run outs meant that Arun Nair arrived at the crease at 60 for 4. Not known for his defensive capabilities, Arun decided that attack was the best form of defence, and his 25 off 17 balls gave the innings some momentum. Unfortunately, he sliced one down deep square leg's throat and North Kildare were forced once again to rebuild. Guy Donald (26*) came in to join the skipper and just as they began to get things back on track, Gordie played on for the second consecutive week in Bagenalstown. 105 for 6, with 71 needed off the last 14 overs.

Ger Horn (19) joined Guy and with the odd hard-fought boundary and the usual scampering of ones and twos, they brought equation to 31 required off 24 balls before Ger was another run out victim. Thereafter, the innings folded quickly enough as the hutch opened and closed rapidly, with North Kildare bowled out for 152.

So near yet so far - literally. Opportunity knocked twice for us. Once when we had Bagenalstown 98 for 6, with 12 overs remaining, and a second time when we needed 31 off 24 balls. But the lack of a fifth bowler and the unfortunate run out of Ger Horn meant that we left Bagenalstown (for the second weekend in a row) empty handed.

Thanks to Colin O'Neill for stepping in at the last second on Saturday night and to Gerry Fennell for (once again) making the trip to Bagenalstown.

We need commitment from our members to support our team by being available as often as possible. Even with a weakened team, we pushed Bagenalstown all the way. Our next match is away to Leinster on bank holiday Monday 6th August. This is our final away match, so I expect full availability from here on in - except those of us lucky enough to be going on holidays....
