Merrion 5 v North Kildare Cricket Club Men's 2nd XI on Sat 07 Jul 2012 at 1.30
North Kildare Cricket Club Lost by 6 wickets

Match report The Mens 2nds were eh..welcomed to Bird Avenue last Saturday by Merrion.

Heavy rain in the days prior to the match meant the outfield hadn't been cut for a few days. However, judging by the lack of grass on the outfield - more a case of weeds - the lack of cutting made no odds to its condition.

The tardy arrival of Merrion meant the game did not start until near 2.00pm. Having lost the tos, North kildare were offered the chance to bat first on the magic carpet.

Openers Safdar Hussain (12) & Paul McGreivy (18) made a sound enough start whilst trying to work out if the mat played as badly as it looked. Tariq Mushtaq (32) came to the crease at the fall of the first wicket and he and Paul put together a half century partnership before Paul was given out LBW. Thereafter, nearly all the batsmen got starts with a couple of people getting 10s and 19s. But the failure to kick on meant that again, North Kildare again failed to bat their overs, being dismissed for 164.

A very tight opening spell from Arun Nair (7-1-27-1) and Paul McGreivy (8-1-23-1) yielded a couple of wickets which meant that by the 10th over, Merrion were 21 for 2. Safdar Hussain (9-1-18-0) produced an excellent spell of controlled bowling, backed up well in the field by good work in the inner circle.

Regrettably, Merrion did not read the sporting signals made by North Kildare during their innings and some rather unfortunate umpiring ensued which left a bad taste in the mouths of several players. In fact, one felt a distinct lack of respect from Merrion towards North Kildare on this occasion, which we hope will be rectified in the return game.

Zak Khan (7-0-26-2) who has been nursing an injured shoulder all season tried his hand - or rather his shoulder - and bowled very well, picking up two wickets in successive balls. Unfortunately, we could not find the breakthrough no matter which one of the nine bowlers were used and Merrion got home for the loss of 4 wickets with 3.5 overs remaining.

A rather chastening experience for all concerned. We were 40 runs short of a total that at one stage looked on the cards, and then lacked the penetration to rattle through the Merrion batting lineup.

Thanks to Gerry Fennell for scoring.

Double weekend comimng up. A trip to Muine Beag (Bagenalstown) this Saturday 14th, followed by a league match away to Knnockharley on Sunday 15th. All hands on deck.
