Wexford v North Kildare Cricket Club Men's 2nd XI on Sat 26 May 2012 at 1.30
North Kildare Cricket Club Lost by 7 wickets

Match report With almost an entire team of players unavailable, the Mens 2nds travelled to Wexford on Saturday. As last year, only 10 players could make the trip.

Having won the toss, North Kildare chose to bat on what looked like a very good deck for batting - a complete contrast to the bumpy outfield - the result of rugby season.

There weren't too many highlights in the North Kildare innings as batsman after batsman threw their wickets away. The bowling was accurate but the shot selection wasn't. In fact, the only accurate thing about the North Kildare innings was the straight drive (or perhaps "slog" would be the better word to describe it) from Zak Khan that connected with his batting partner's posterior. The posterior in question belonged to Ger Horn, and whilst those around generally had a good laugh, Ger lay on the turf in a fair bit of discomfort. So having saved four runs, he eventually got himself off the floor to continue his innings.

Arun Nair (23) playing his first match for North Kildare top scored but there were only three other double figure scores as the innings subsided tamely with 90 runs on the board.

With limited bowling options, it was going to be a tall order for North Kildare. But no matter what, we were determined to make Wexford work for their victory. Shiv Sethi (9-4-12-2) opened the bowling with Arun Nair (9-4-19-1) and applied pressure with tight bowling but try as they may, they found that luck wasn't on their side. The Wexford batsmen had their fair share of Chinese cuts and play and misses but couldn't find the breakthrough that would enable us to rattle through their batting order.

Paul Hunt (8-1-29-0) produced a fiery spell which didn't yield any wickets but showed that he can be a handful and will be one to watch this season. Wexford eventually got over the line, taking 32 overs to reach their victory target for the loss of 3 wickets.

So a disappointing trip yet again to Wexford. The batting was poor - lets be honest. Too many loose shots that handed our wickets to Wexford. But an exceptional fielding performance - given the condition of the outfield (with not one misfield) - backed up by bowling that asked a lot of questions - made Wexford work extremely hard for their victory.

What this game showed is that we need continuity in our team. As those sitting exams return shortly, competition for places will heat up.

Cup matches for a few weeks now as the YM Salver, Middle 2 and Midlands Cups take centre stage for the Mens 2nds.
