Pembroke 4 v North Kildare Cricket Club Men's 2nd XI on Sun 06 May 2012 at 1.30
North Kildare Cricket Club Won by 50 runs
Match report
The Mens 2nds travelled to Sydney Parade on Sunday 6th May hoping to get their season underway at the third attempt.
Having won the toss, skipper Gordie decided to bat. The sell out crowd had barely taken their seats before Sean Dalton's off stump got knocked back to make the score 6 for 1 after 9 balls.
Some tight bowling from the Pembroke skipper and his son at the other end meant that in the initial stages scoring opportunities were few. Gareth Moxom was somewhat unlucky to be sent back to the hutch, and was soon to be followed by Vishu Shokeenda and Paul Hunt, leaving North Kildare at 20 for 4.
Dáire O'Neill joined Gordie at the crease in need of some serious rebuilding work. As they eased their way in and the change bowlers came on, the runs started to flow at a reasonable pace and these two looked pretty comfortable for some time. They brought their 50 partnership up before Gordie (42) was out with the total on 76 for 5 off 22 overs.
Dáire - with the policy of defending the good ball and hammering anything loose - continued on and was finally bowled for 46 having held the innings together. Thereafter, another famous collapse happened until Guy Donald and Johnny Walshe came together at 124 for 9 off 35 overs.
Some entertaining hitting - including a six over cover from Johnny - and some industrious running brought the total to 163 by the time Guy was run out with 2 balls left in the innings. Guy finished with 29 and Johnny on 15 not out. An invaluable partnership which was to prove its worth later in the match.
North Kildare took to the field in need of early wickets, and Paul Hunt
(4-1-23-1) duly obliged in the second over as he sent opener Smith's leg stump cartwheeling halfway to Sandymount Strand. The next two Pembroke batsmen took advantage of some wayward bowling and put together a quickly compiled partnership before Guy Donald (7-0-45-2) had their number three caught by Tariq Mushtaq - who would later have his say in the conclusion of the match.
Cameron Futter's (6-0-25-0) figures will suggest that he had an average day at the office, but in truth, he bowled far better than those figures and on another day he would have picked up a couple of wickets.
Shiv Sethi (8-4-13-5) then came on and in his third over bowled the Pembroke number four to make the score 72 for 3. Next ball - same result. 72 for 4. Then we had a sight that one doesn't normally see on a cricket pitch - an incoming batsman carrying his batting gear with him onto the field. He put it all on - with the assistance of Shiv - and kept out the hatrick ball. He failed to keep the next ball out however as Shiv sent him on his way, bowled again. So at the beginning of the over, Pembroke were 72 for 2 - by the end, they were 72 for 5.
Guy was coming to the end of his spell and managed to get the remaining Pembroke opener to chase a wide one (and that's being extremely polite - to call it a wide one. In fact, it was so wide the batsman needed an extension to reach it!) into the hands of Vishu at gully. 101 for 8.
Tariq Mushtaq (2.3-0-3-2) came on to replace Guy and with drinks loooming, the Pembroke number 9 decided to play for drinks by splicing a catch up to Paul Hunt at mid on. 109 for 9 and North Kildare on the brink of victory but well aware that tails can wag - as ours had earlier.
In his next over, Tariq got some extra bounce, the batsman edged and Gordie did the rest to give us a win by 50 runs.
A great way to start the season for the 2nds. Collapse, some repair work done in the middle of the innings, collapse again - and a momentum-building partnership at the end. Then an inspirational spell of bowling from Shiv backed up by great ground fielding and catching. Well done all.
