North Kildare Cricket Club Men's 1st XI v Railway Union 2 on Sat 04 Aug 2012 at 1.00
North Kildare Cricket Club Lost By 30 Runs (4/25pts)

Match report Having only just failed to concede 400 runs last week against Laois the 1sts tried once more in this game but again came up just short, conceding 396. So near, yet so far. Unfortunately NK lost a very important toss again here, as was the case last week, with RU getting the opportunity to set a hefty target in very bat friendly conditions. With a good batting surface (our mat), a decently paced outfield and short to ridiculously short boundaries (thanks to the relentless rain and the inability of certain areas of the outfield to dry properly), the 1sts knew they'd have to bowl and field extremely well to restrict RU to around the 250 mark. They didn't. Oppo opener Uddin was dropped early on, a great chance at slip, it proved costly as he went on to make a quick 82. This was undoubtedly the early breakthrough NK needed and perhaps it would have made a significant difference to RU's final total but it wasn't to be. All the oppo batsmen made hay with some particularly brutal punishment for the Kildare bowlers towards the end as RU managed to bludgeon a further 80 runs off the last 5 overs. Of the NK bowlers only Daire O'Neill could be reasonably content with his efforts as he, despite being expensive like everyone else, bagged himself a 4-for. So, who could believe it, the dog had bitten Kildare in the arse twice now and this time it was definitely their fault (and those useless coins that wont land properly).

Perhaps the 395 required last week to beat Laois was never ever going to be achieved but in the case of this match the target of 397 was really not beyond the realms of possibilty at all. (Nobody said exactly this at tea mind and I'm only saying it now with the benefit of knowing we came up just 31 runs short). But genuinely the conditions here offered up a fantastic opportunity for everyone who would bat to get a big score and the 1sts had a stronger batting line-up than last week with Ul-Haq and Satchwell back in the side. However it did prove just too much of an ask for the 1sts with only Walshe making hay with a superb ton. NK needed big scores starting at the top but Neavyn, Satchwell, Singh and Ul-Haq managed just 59 runs combined and this was never going to be good enough from 1-4. In reality the 1sts never really threatened their target and only got to within 31 runs of victory at the end because Wasif Ali murdered some very average bowling, making his maiden 50 for NK off a mere 19 balls. Thanks in the main to Walshe, Shokeenda and Ali, Kildare redeemed themselves somewhat and at least salvaged 4 losing bonus pts from the game.

This defeat coupled with last weeks means that the 1sts are now unfortunately highly unlikely to finish in the top 2 of Div 4 even with wins in all their remaining games. Still plenty of cricket to be played tho and the 1sts will be keen to put an end to this losing streak and any (albeit remote) possibility of being dragged down toward the bottom 2 of Div 4.
