The 1sts came into this game atop Div 4 with 2 wins and 1 no result and were hoping stay at the summit of their division with another victory here against bottom of the table Phoenix. Phoenix however must have been more determined to get off the bottom than Kildare were to stay at the top as the visitors coasted to a comfortable 6 wicket win. Acting captain Neavyn won the toss for NK and he decided to have a bat first on the mat. The 1sts felt a score of somewhere around 250 would be about par but in hindsight, given the slowness of the outfield, a score of around 210-220 would have been a decent effort. Things started poorly for Kildare when Neavyn hit a short and widish delivery straight to point. Manny Singh, unfortunately struggling with a back injury, followed for only 12, adjudged lbw. Ul-Haq and Walshe batted on till drinks, adding 37 runs and taking the score to 71-2 off 25. Slow scoring rate yes but it was a position that Kildare could have pushed on from. Walshe however fell immediately after drinks caught behind. This brought the in form Vishu Shokeenda to the crease. NK really needed Vishu and Ul-Haq to get things moving at this point however Ul-Haq, who had been batting within himself, surprised everyone when he hit a poor delivery, a low full toss, straight up in the air and was caught at mid-wicket. Vorster was dismissed very softly soon after when he guided a nothing delivery straight to square-leg. O'Neill got off the mark with a nice cover drive but promptly fell next delivery caught behind. The 1sts were in real trouble now on 97-6. Wasif Ali made a brisk 12 before slapping one straight to extra cover and yet another NK batsman was out caught. 13 more runs were added before Vishu was sent packing when, attempting a quick single, he was run out by an excellent direct hit. A shame this for Kildare as Vishu had once again looked in good touch in making a run a ball 35 and perhaps with the loss of Vishu the 1sts chances of getting to or close to 200 had gone. Arun Nair followed for 5 and Gareth Gilmour, not at his freshest after a late night on the beer in Newcastle and hence his position at no.11, was last out, run out after another excellent direct hit. And so the 1sts finished on a paltry looking score of 153 all out and committed the terrible sin of not batting out there overs. NK were left to rue some very soft dismissals but the Phoenix bowlers bowled well with the 5 seamers they used finding plenty of movement through the air.

Kildare would need some early wickets to put some pressure on the oppo if they were going to defend this total. Wasif Ali bowled a good opening spell of 6 overs but couldn't get the breakthrough, although he threatened, beating oppo opener Anders outside edge on a few occasions. Arun Nair and Vorster had a go at the other end but never really troubled the oppo openers. The breakthrough finally did come via a run out. Gilmour, who put in an excellent performance in the field, made a good diving stop at point and his throw found bowler Manny Singh who ran out oppo opener Ford after some yes no calling and a slip by Ford. 54-1 became 80-2 when Singh removed oppo no.3 Vaidyanathan caught & bowled and at this point NK still had a glimmer of hope. Singh couldn't continue with his spell however as his back started to trouble him again. 80-2 became 102-3 when good ground fielding from Vishu and an accurate throw to bowler Ul-Haq was good enough to run out oppo no.4 McNelis. Another couple of quick wickets at this stage might have made things interesting but, despite some good bowling from Ul-Haq, it wasn't to be. Mushtaq and O'Neill had a go but without any joy either. Oppo opener Anders had gone past 50 and with good support from oppo no.5 Wardell he took Phoenix to victory, well almost. With the oppo needing just 1 run for victory Neavyn decided to give himself a trundle. With his second bsll he clean bowled Anders and the 1sts had at least got another point. Neavyn bowled a wide two balls later and that was that.

The 1sts simply didn't bat well enough in this game and left themselves with too much to do in the 2nd innings. Despite making a determined fist of it with the ball and in the field Kildare never got the regular wickets they needed to trouble Phoenix and ultimately the oppo coasted to their win.
