North Kildare Cricket Club Men's 2nd XI v Knockharley on Sun 24 Jul 2011 at 1.30
North Kildare Cricket Club Lost 2 wickets
Match report
The Mens 2nds were on the receiving end of yet another tight defeat at The Maws on Sunday.
Batting first, North Kildare fell to 51 for 8 after 16 overs. Resistance was offered by Gordie Clarke, whose 40 runs contained 9 fours. However, when another contentious umpiring decision went Knockharley's way (Howzat Dad??!!), the writing was on the wall and the innings folded with a paltry 92 runs on the board. In truth, the overall batting performance was as poor as it can be. There was plenty of ability in the lineup but very little application used as too many airy-fairy shots meant lost wickets.
So we had 10 overs before tea to try and rescue the situation. The last ball of the first over, Paul McGreivy (9-2-23-3)struck by removing one of the Knockharley openers. Shiv Sethi (9-3-11-2) then struck on the last ball of his first over by trapping the No. 3 bang in front. Paul then got wickets in his next two overs and then Shiv bowled Mujeni to leave Knockharley at 26 for 5 at tea. Game on.
Knockharley managed to keep Paul & Shiv at bay after tea so bowling changes were needed. Gary Hansell Jnr. (5-0-17-1) came on and did the trick by breaking up a threatening partnership - Shiv taking the catch. Then while attempting to stop a ball going down the legside off Zak, Gordie damaged his finger. After a delay while he put his dislocated finger back in place, he took off his keeping gloves for Shiv to take over, and wandered down to fine leg.
Given time to ponder the match situation at fine leg - and with Knockharley 11 runs from victory - the skipper decided to try his hand with the ball. What many years ago were quite decent leg breaks, these days they're really only grenades. However, they came surprisingly well out of his hand and he managed to get the Knockharley skipper to top edge the ball up in the air to Shiv. Interesting...
Next over from Dáire O'Neill yielded a few runs, but off the last ball of the over came a run out. Unfortunately, this left Giggins on strike and he managed to get the first ball of the next over away to the boundary and seal the win for Knockharley by 2 wickets.
This young team showed great character in the field. In Paul & Shi, we probably have two of the best bowlers in the league, but we're short another one or two quality bowlers. In addition, we need to learn from our batting mistakes. Wickets were thrown away when occupation of the crease would have meant a score of over 120 was possible - which would have been in this case a winning score.
The skipper will probably take a few weeks off from playing as xrays show two fractures in his injured finger.
Many thanks to John Smith whose umpiring was very good throughout the game, and to Naomi for scoring. As always, these kind of contributions are very much appreciated.
