Malahide 4 v North Kildare Cricket Club Men's 2nd XI on Sun 17 Jul 2011 at 1.30
North Kildare Cricket Club Won by 147 runs
Match report
The 2nds travelled to Malahide on Sunday and picked up a maximum points victory.
Batting first in wet conditions, the top four could consider themselves unfortunate to have been dismissed, which left us at 43 for 4 after 12 overs.
The ever-entertaining Cameron Futter joined Zak Khan at the crease and they put together 39 for the next wicket inside 6 overs. Whilst attempting a quick single (and without the aid of spikes - ahem!), Cameron slipped and fell on his rear. Zak joined him on the ground as he too (without spikes - ahem!) slipped. They almost shook hands in the middle before Cameron got up to make his ground, by which stage the bowler also slipped but had enough time to take the bails off. Next batsman in - Ger Horn.
In contrasting styles, these two attacked. Zak (68 off 75 balls, 1 six, 7 fours) hammered the ball around the ground, whilst Ger (31 off 45 balls) brought back memories to his father Brian of back yard cricket in the Horn household, preferring tip-and-run. Together they put on 83 runs to bring the score to 165 for 6 by the time Zak was LBW. A great, match-winning partnership from the two lads which was topped off by what was to come.
Rohan Madhavan came in for his first North Kildare innings of the season and made 32 (5 fours) off 25 balls, and together with Rob Beattie they got us up to 222. A really good effort which would surely put pressure on the Malahide batsmen.
Early inroads into the Malahide batting lineup was required - and with Cameron (9-3-28-5) taking two wickets without a run on the board, things had started well for us. Backed up by excellent fielding, pressure was on Malahide.
Paul McGreivy (9-5-14-3) did his usual tight spell from the other end which allowed Cameron to attack the stumps - with success - and by the time Malahide were 37 for 8, the Fat Lady had taken out her glass of salted water, ready for gargling.
However, as the dark rain clouds circled above, a few lucky edges brought the Malahide score to 75 for 9 when Dáire O'Neill caught and bowled the No. 11 batsman thus giving us a win by 147 runs.
Many thanks to Paul McGreivy and Ger Horn who helped get the team out while the skipper was "relaxing" on holidays. In addition, our thanks to John Smith for umpiring and for Gerry Fennell for scoring. Few people really appreciate the importance of having a umpire and scorer in place.
Well done to all - great win.
