North Kildare Cricket Club Men's 2nd XI v Wexford on Sun 11 Sep 2011 at 12.30
North Kildare Cricket Club Won by 5 wickets

Match report The Mens 2nds secured their status in Division 7 with a hard fought victory over Wexford Wanderers at The Maws on Sunday.

Winning the toss, Gordie chose to field first and so North Kildare took the field knowing only a win would guarantee keeping them in this league for the 2012 season.

Wexford safely negotiated the first 7 overs before Neil Vorster (6.5-1-14-2) suceeded in getting the Wexford skipper to chip the ball into the grateful hands of Gordie at mid-wicket. Next over, Paul McGreivy (9-3-20-3) trapped the other opener LBW which left Wexford at 21 for 2 off 9 overs.

More success was to follow shortly afterwards when Safdar Hussain (9-1-22-2) got a wicket with his second delivery via a very sharp caught & bowled. He followed this up a few overs later by having the Wexford No. 5 caught in the deep by Shiv Sethi. 40 for 4 off 19 overs.

Wexford's next pair got their team into a reasonable position and had dragged the score to 81 for 4 before Gordie (4-0-15-1) brought himself into the attack and removed the dangerous Brennan for 26. He had "buckets" McGreivy at 1st slip to thank for this as Paul grabbed the opportunity with both hands. Some very unkind people suggested the only reason Paul held onto this chance was because there was a fiver attached to the ball. A very unfair and completely unnecessary assessment...

The re-introduction of Shiv Sethi (9-2-13-2) into the attack brought two wickets in the 36th over, and North Kildare went for the kill when Paul also dismissed two batsmen in the 41st over. Finally, Vossie finished the job off by bowling the No. 11, leaving North Kildare a victory target of 117.

Gary Hansell Jnr. & Ian Walshe set about chasing this down, but when a mixup occurred, Gary was left stranded half way down the wicket. 10 for 1 off 4 overs.

Sean Dalton (20) & Ian Walshe (24) combined well using a safety first policy to good effect, before Sean was caught with the total on 44. Vossie (41 not out) came in at four and showed positive intent by dispatching half-volleys and full tosses whilst also running between the wickets with purpose. When Ian was caught with the total on 71, most the hard work was done. But when Zak Khan - playing his final match for North Kildare before his return home to India - had his off stump uprooted, things could have got out of hand. Such a shame Zak couldn't conclude his time with North Kildare by hitting the winning runs. We will miss Zak - he is an absolute gentleman.

Shiv Sethi (12) entertained us with his unique brand of batting. His 6 ball innings went as follows: 4, dot, 4, dot, 4, out!!! So, 90 for 5 as Rohan Madhavan came in at 7. Not wishing to muck about, Vossie & Rohan set about knocking the total off as quickly as possible. Having already seen two run outs in our innings, the boys almost produced another classic of their own as more farcical calling (well, we're not sure there actually WAS any calling!) almost finished up with the two batsmen at the same end. But for a wild throw from the fielder, someone would have had a lot of explaining to do.

Alas, Rohan didn't fancy finishing it off in singles, preferring to hammer a four over long on to do it in style. A hard fought victory over a Wexford team that fielded extremely well and weren't going to roll over too easily.

This game saw the return to The Maws of former North Kildare member - Graham Mooney - standing as an umpire. He did a great job and it was much appreciated by the team. We look forward to seeing more of Graham at the club next season.

So another season is over and the one word you couldn't use to describe it is "dull". This was most certainly NOT a dull season.

Many thanks to the 37 players that stepped onto the field and represented North Kildare Cricket Club 2nd XI this season. When the chips were down and trips to Wexford, Bagenalstown and Laois were on the agenda, it was a seriously tough job getting a team - never mind a competitive team - out to fulfill the fixture.

There are so many people to thank for their input and contributions and though this might sound like a speech from the Oscars, I truly am obliged to recognise so many people for so many reasons.

To Paul McGreivy & Gerard Horn who stepped in and helped get the team out whilst I was meant to be on holiday. These blokes stood up when it counted both on and off the field. Their contributions should never be underestimated.

Many thanks go to Gerry Fennel for his work not only on the outfield - which is as a result of hours of work every week - but for being there to maintain an accurate scorebook. The team from FÁS that worked so dilligently on the square should be applauded and deserve the respect of our club.

To Dave Brady, who turned up to put the covers on and mark the pitch on several occasions on wet and blustery Sunday mornings, many thanks Dave.

Brian Horn organised many umpires this season and did a very under-rated job because as a skipper, the last thing you want is your own team umpiring as this can place them in difficult positions and can cause problems with opponents. Many thanks Brian.

To all the parents that travelled with us, provided lifts to the matches and gave great support. This refers in particular to the Machins and the O'Neills.

To my wife Ruth who put up with endless cricket phone calls/texts. How she tolerated all of this I will never know!

And finally, to our two best supporters - Andrew McGreivy & Ethan Clarke. They played together nearly all day at each of the games and hardly ever fell out. The two boys would be there for the start of every game (in Ethan's case, he had to be present for the toss!) and would still be there at the very end. Lets just hope they're half as talented as their fathers!
